Standardized Testing With No Child Left Behind (NCLB) teachers face the reality that the majority of the time they spend is on teaching the core subject areas that are tested on the exam Time In our school district the first 90 minutes of instruction is dedicated to reading and it must be uninterrupted. Some principals may have scheduled time for other subjects that are non-negotiable Digital Immigrants Digital immigrants are those of us who have not grow up with technology. We learned how to use computers and other technological tools as adults. Therefore we have not had as much experience with technology as our students.

Digital Natives Today’s students – K through college – represent the first generations to grow up with this new technology. They have spent their entire lives surrounded by and using computers, videogames, digital music players, video cams, cell phones, and all the other toys and tools of the digital age. Today’s average college grads have spent less than 5, 000 hours of their lives reading, but over 10, 000 hours playing video games (not to mention 20, 000 hours watching TV). Computer games, email, the Internet, cell phones and instant messaging are integral parts of their lives (Prensky, 2001). Fast learners They have learned to use a computer by simply figuring it out. They play with, learn how to manipulate it, and use it for their advancement (which may or may not be academic). How By do we reach them? using the same technologies they play with at home. We must face the reality that as teachers we are competing with television, video games, computers, facebook, and many others.

Problem Solvers There is an uncertain future for our students that we can not define. This is the first time this happened to humanity. Students need to be taught not just how to solve problems in math, but take those skills and apply them to life in general to solve problems. Researchers Before Google if we want to find out about something, we go look for it at the library in a book. In the present people go to straight to google for answers. Google get 2 billion searches worldwide in a day. We know say “Google It” and this noun has evolved to a verb. Redefining Literacy We have added new words to the dictionary that did not exist 20 years ago. For exmaple: google, wiki, and blog to mention a few. Global Consciousness Our world is now connected at the touch of a button. With simple things like a free email, Liknedin, and social websites among other things students can access resources that were unreachable before.
