SUMMARY
South Africa – Sweden University Forum • Strategic internationalization project running from 2017 -2020 • 17 850 000 SEK Budget (29 600 000 ZAR) • Strengthening ties between Sweden & South Africa in research, education and innovation • Collaboration between 27 universities together with embassies, organizations, funding agencies & ministries in both countries • Bringing together more than 300 researchers, Ph. D: s and students from Sweden & South Africa in seminars, exchanges & projects • Creating innovative ways to approach internationalization & utilizing the power of online tools • Connecting universities with funding agencies, industry, ministries & surrounding society in working towards the Sustainable Development Goals

Background STINT proposal • Vice Chancellors from 15 SE-universities + 4 funding agencies visited South Africa in March 2016 • Visits to DHET, NRF, DST, University of Pretoria, Wits, Cape Town universities • During Almedalen, UU VC Eva Åkesson presented a proposal for how SE universities can work with South Africa : STINT Strategic Grant for Internationalization • During the SANORD conference in Uppsala in September 2016 the idea of the proposal was presented to SA universities • Invititation to join the project was sent out to SE and SA universitiies during September/October 2016

South Africa – Sweden Research & Innovation Weeks: Research seminars • 14 -18 May 2018 • Approx. 150 researchers from Sweden and South Africa • 6 parallel sessions based on mutual academic challenges • Discussion of next steps for collaborations/projects • Topics: • Climate change, natural resources and sustainability • Transforming Higher Education Curricula: the nexus between academia and society • Social transformation through change: Knowledge and social development strategies for society • Understanding the burden of disease in Sweden and South Africa and its impact on the health systems of the two countries in the future • Urbanisation and cities in the 21 st Century • Digital technologies, big data, and cybersecurity • Sessions for high-level university management, funding agencies, government representatives • Discuss issues regarding funding, long-term collaboration etc.
South Africa – Sweden Research & Innovation weeks: surrounding activities Based on interests from universities & research groups • Bottom-up initiatives • Spread out across universities in SA & SE 1. University - Industry linkage – innovation • Collaboration with Business Sweden • Swedish companies in SA, SA companies • Ex. Aim-Day • Include Vinnova, Council for Scientific & Industrial Research 2. Focused workshops/guest lectures/visits • Chance to continue and develop discussions • Ex. Water in Port Elizabeth, Big Data in Cape Town 3. Capacity development for emerging researchers • Seminars in academic writing, proposal writing, supervision development 4. Social outreach – glocalization • Working with local communities

Short term research mobility projects • Seed funding for researchers to facilitate ”next step” collaboration • Action co-funded by DHET • Applications open directly after two first research seminars • Open to participants in seminars or Ph. D: s, post-docs and/or other colleagues in research group • Mandatory for proposals • Linked to SDG: s • Reciprocal • Plan for how mobility project can be included in the interactive platform • Inclusion of research groups from at least 2 SE + 2 SA unis • Priority for proposals that include: • a plan for joint supervision of Ph. D: s/ master students • Co-funding from universities • Selection will be done by Steering Committee, based on advice from Academic Advisory Committee
