Jamie's Law – Suicide Prevention Education • Jamie 's Law was named after a young man who killed himself. Since his passing, his sister is bringing awareness to the high risk of suicide among young adults. • In 2013, Suicide was the second leading cause of death among West Virginia residents ages 10 -34. • Suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth in the United States. • You can help prevent these deaths by knowing the risk factors, warning signs, and what to do if you or a friend may need help.

Being able to recognize the Risk Factors and Warning Signs is the first step in saving a life.

What Can You Do To Help? Acknowledge Care It is always better to overreact than to under react. Tell

Acknowledge • Take every comment seriously. • Ask them directly if they are thinking of suicide. • Acknowledge their feelings and that they are real.

Care • Let your friend know that they are important to you. • Listen and offer support. • Express you concern and encourage him or her to talk to a caring adult.

Tell • In addition to encouraging your friend to get help, you also need to get help from an adult immediately. • Never promise to keep this secret.
