Book Reports for Extensive Reading Independent Reading Management Kit, by Beverley Jones and Maureen Lodge

These graphic organizers are from the Independent Reading Management Kit. This is a book full of book reports. Task: 1. Take a book report and complete it using your book 2. If you finish quickly, take another report until they are all finished. 3. Share your book reports with your group. Discuss the style of graphic organizer and the language focus (sight words, spelling, phonics, vocabulary, grammar, strategies, etc. ) Note: The book reports are on my site under “Materials Downloads”

Adapting book reports Next you are going to redesign and create a new book report. You can choose: - more advanced book report for a higher level text or - a simpler book report for lower level Ss (e. g. phonics, ABCs, etc.

Text Coding A code is invented to focus on a specific literacy skill or strategy. Students read the text and add the codes to the text or post it notes.

Text Coding 1. Complete the worksheet. 2. Using your storybook, create a new code (3 -4 symbols) using the post it notes. 3. Teach the code to your partner and ask them to code the text with the post it notes.

Anticipation Guide An anticipation guide involves students in answering questions, often true/false before reading a text.

Hotel Mystery You are going to role play a guest in a hotel. There has been a murder and you need to guess who is the killer! You and the people you are with are not the murderer. One of the other guests that you saw today is probably the murderer. You need to share each clue with your partners and build the information you know about the other guests to decide who you think is the murderer. 1. Everybody read the introduction to your group to set the scene. 2. Read the clues to your group one by one. All guests read clue 1, then all guests read clue 2, etc. 3. Read slowly and take notes or drawings to help you put together the cause. 4. At the end you will guess which other guest in the hotel is the killer.
