Learning Objectives: The objectives of RMMM Strategy are Ø to understand the Risk Mitigation Ø to understand the Risk Monitoring Ø to understand the process of risk management Ø to understand the RMMM plan. 2
RMMM: Ø RMMM stands for Risk Mitigation, Monitoring and Management. There are three issues in strategy for handling the risk is Ø Risk Avoidance or Risk Mitigation Ø Risk monitoring Ø Risk management 3
Risk Mitigation: Ø If a software team adopts a proactive approach to risk, avoidance is always the best strategy. This is achieved by developing a plan for risk mitigation. Ø Risk mitigation means preventing the risk to occur (Risk Avoidance). Steps taken in risk mitigation: Ø Communicate with the concerned staff to find the probable risk. Ø Find out and eliminate all those causes that can create risk before the project starts. Ø Develop a policy in an organization which will help to continue the project even though some staff leaves the organization. 4
Steps taken in risk mitigation (Continued): Ø Everybody in the project team should be acquainted with the current development activity. Ø Maintain the corresponding documents in timely manner. This documentation should be strictly as per the standards set by the organization. Ø Conduct timely reviews in order to speed up the work. Ø For conducting every critical activity during software development, provide the additional staff if required. 5
Risk Monitoring: Ø The objective of risk monitoring is to check whether the predicted risks really occur or not. To ensure the steps defined to avoid the risk are applied properly or not. In risk monitoring process following things must be monitored by the project manager. Ø The approach of the team members as pressure of project varies. Ø The degree in which the team performs with the spirit of team work. Ø The type of co-operation among the team members. The types of problems that are occurring. Availability of jobs within and outside the organization. Ø The project manager should monitor certain mitigation steps 6
Risk management: Ø Project manager perform this task when risk becomes a reality. Ø If project manager is successful in applying the project mitigation effectively then it becomes very much easy to manage the risks. Definition: Risk management is the process of identifying, assessing, and prioritizing the risks to minimize, monitor, and control the probability of uncertain events. 7
Seven Principles of Risk Management The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) identifies seven principles that provide a framework to achieve effective risk management. Ø Maintain a global perspective Ø Take a forward-looking view Ø Encourage open communication Ø Integrate Ø Emphasize a continuous process Ø Develop a shared product vision: Ø Encourage teamwork 8
Stages in Risk Management : Ø Risk identification: Possible project, product and business risks are identified. Ø Risk analysis: The likelihood and consequences of these risks are assessed. Ø Risk planning: Various plans are designed to address the risk either by avoiding it or minimizing its effects on the project. Ø Risk monitoring: The risk is constantly assessed and plans for risk mitigation are revised as more information about the risk becomes available. 9

RMMM Plan: Ø The RMMM plan is a document in which all the risk analysis activities are described. Ø Project manager includes this document as a part of overall project plan. Ø Sometimes specific RMMM plan is not created. Each risk can be described individually using risk information sheet. Ø The Risk information sheet can be maintained by database systems. 12
Summary: In this lecture the following topics has covered Ø Risk Mitigation Ø Risk Monitoring Ø Risk Management , its principles, process and paradigm Ø RMMM plan 13
