Random Sample A sample where individuals are chosen randomly from the population. Each individual has an equal chance of being chosen.
Random Sample • Example: Draw ten M&M’s from a bag without looking. • Two types of Random Samples are – Stratified sample – Systematic sample
Stratified Sample A sample created by dividing the whole population into distinct groups, and then choosing the same fraction of members from each group.
Stratified Sample A sample created by dividing the whole population into distinct groups, and then choosing the same fraction of members from each group.
Stratified Sample • Is a type of random sample • Example: – Surveying the same percentage of grade 9, grade 10, grade 11 and grade 12 students about the type of food they want in the cafeteria.
Systematic Sample A sample created by choosing individuals at fixed intervals from an ordered list of the whole population A G M S B E C D F H I J K N O P Q R T U V W X L

Systematic Sample • Is a type of random sample • Example: Choosing every 7 th player from a hockey league when players are listed in order by age.
Convenience Sample A sample created by choosing individuals that are easy to access from a population.
