Stratified Sample A sample created by dividing the whole population into distinct groups, and then choosing the same fraction of members from each group.

Stratified Sample • Is a type of random sample • Example: – Surveying the same percentage of grade 9, grade 10, grade 11 and grade 12 students about the type of food they want in the cafeteria.

Systematic Sample • Is a type of random sample • Example: Choosing every 7 th player from a hockey league when players are listed in order by age.

Convenience Sample A sample created by choosing individuals that are easy to access from a population.

Convenience Sample • Is a non-random sample • Example: Choose every frozen pizza at your local corner store to test the quality of a specific brand’s pizza.

Voluntary Response Sample A sample is created by inviting the whole population to participate. Only those interested respond. I’ll do it!

Voluntary Response Sample • Example: Those from a community who call a phone number in response to a flyer that you place in everyone’s mailbox. • This is not a random sample
