Objectives • After the completion of the class, the student will; - Define profession? - What are the objectives of continuing education? - What are the needs of continuing education in nursing profession?

Definition of nursing “The unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health, its recovery, or to a peaceful death that the client would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will, or knowledge. And to do this in such a way as to help the client gain independence as rapidly as possible. ” (Virginia Henderson, International Council of Nurses, 1973)

Definition of profession Ø Profession is defined as "a vocation requiring advanced training and usually involving mental rather than manual work, as teaching, engineering, especially medicine, law. (Webster 1989) Ø A profession is an occupation based on specialized intellectual study and training, the purpose of which is to supply skilled services with ethical components and others.

Profession • Is basically intellectual • Based on a body of knowledge that can be learned. • Practical rather than theoretical. • Has a strong internal organization of members. • Has practitioners who are motivated by altruism (desire to help others)

Continuing education: It is planned activity and directed towards meeting the learning needs available, following their completion of college programme to keep the registered nurses abreast of their particular field of interest.

These experiences are designed to promote the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes for the enhancement of nursing practice , thus improving health care to the public. (ANA)
