Production of hydrogen from wind: challenges in Denmark Søren Bjerregaard Pedersen, CEO, Hydrogen Valley 29 -05 -2020
Who is Hydrogen Valley? § Business fund working with hydrogen, biogas and methanol § We take active part in the green transition of the Danish energy system – turning visions into actions, projects and jobs § We collaborate with private companies, public authorities and research institutes § Non-profit organization – financed by the municipality of Mariagerfjord and project aids § 30 m. € from funds invested in projects and activities within the FCH-sector
Who is Hydrogen Valley?
Why has Denmark been chosen for the project? § Denmark is one of the countries in the EU with the most ambitious energy policy § Denmark has a lot of wind energy § Denmark has know-how within FCH technologies § Denmark is the first country in the world to have a national network of hydrogen refueling stations § Hydrogen cars are exempt from taxes until 2021

The Hy. Balance process
Hy. Balance overview
Hy. Balance project: PEM electrolyzer design
Return of experience from Hy. Balance on the electrolyzer § >70 tons of hydrogen produced § >7000 hours of operation § Operational availability: >95% § Cell stacks can be operated asymmetrical
Implementing phases - storage § The underground of the Northern part of Denmark holds unique opportunities for the storage of hydrogen in large scale, in the form of salt caverns
Implementing phases – hydrogen § Hydrogen being launched in larger scale across Europe § Primarily in cities § Next step is large scale electrolysis and demonstration (+100 units) § price reduction of Hydrogen with a factor 3 before 2030
Implementing phases - methanol Methanol Synthesis combines CO 2 from biogas with green hydrogen. This is a key enabler for the multi-output The partners are: biogas plant owners, industry and gas companies § Phase 1 – Pilot-demo at Aalborg University (Started: March 1 st 2019) § Phase 2 – Full-scale test at local biogas plant in Hydrogen Valley, Hobro § Phase 3 – Circular system involving all value streams Phase 1 Phase 2 Phase 3
Implementing phases - amonia § Ammonia can be (and already is) produced in large scale § A Danish consortium plans to bring a large-scale green ammonia plant to the market § This project meets future demand of CO 2 neutral bunker fuels
Next step in Denmark § Hy. Balance has paved the way for Power-to-X to reach the top of the political agenda § Major players have reached consensus in developing 1, 3 GW of electrolysis near large CO 2 emitters in Copenhagen
Conclusions – Why hydrogen? Hydrogen is the enabler of the green transition 1. Hydrogen can be used for heavy utility transport due to zero-emission profile, combined with fast charging (2 -3 minutes) 2. Methanol can provide a low-emission alternative, and provide usage of the existing infrastructure 3. Ammonia can be easily implemented in e. g. ship engines All of the above requires hydrogen
