Pride Will Mess You Up Prov. 13: 10 -Only by pride cometh contention but with the well-advised is wisdom (NKJV)

Pride How do you define pride?

Pride It’s not necessarily wrong to take pride in something we’ve done well. This kind of pride isn’t boastful or self-centered, but is a feeling of satisfaction over what we’ve accomplished. The writer of Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament declared, “Nothing is better than that a man should rejoice in his own works” (Ecclesiastes 3: 22, NKJV). Sinful pride is self-centered and boastful, and makes us take credit for everything we are and everything we do

Pride Selfish pride can be defined as "excessive confidence or glorification in one's self, possessions or nation. " The concept is found in The Bible along with pride itself, in words such as arrogance, haughtiness and conceit, among others, all of which are opposite of Godly humility. The wrongness of self-centered pride is essentially twofold. On a spiritual level, it inevitably leads to disregard, disrespect and disobedience to God. while a form of self-delusion, it isn't necessarily as much an overestimation of one's self as it is a dangerous underestimation of others,

Pride What how can pride be harmful to us?

Pride Can Be Destructive Prov. 11: 2 -When pride comes, then comes shame; But with the humble is wisdom (NKJV) God no longer on your side (Prov. 6: 16 -19) Cause you to make promises you cannot keep (Prov. 6: 1 -5) Can make you speak and do the wrong things Prov. 14: 3, 12 & 16; 3. In the mouth of fools is a rod of pride……. . 12. There is a way that seems right to a man but leads to death…. . 16. Wise men fear and depart from evil but a fool rages and is self-confident.

Pride Boasting may come in an obvious form or it may be more subtle. If someone openly proclaims to you how much money he is making, there is no mistaking what is going on. The more sly boasters have perfected the art of dropping names and letting slip what they have accomplished or purchased or experienced. But sometimes this can be a form of boasting; it is all meant to impress. Scripture takes a realistic view of boasting. “When people commend themselves, it doesn’t count for much” (2 Corinthians 10: 18).

Pride We are told in God’s Word that if we want to boast, we should learn to boast about the right thing. “This is what the LORD says: ‘Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches. But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord’” (Jeremiah 9: 23– 24).

Pride Showing off may be pardonable in children. Every parent has heard a child cry, “Look at me!” But in grown-ups, showing off is not so cute. Are you doing things to make sure the attention stays on you? Making sure others know your degrees, qualifications and material items. All this may be equivalent of calling out to the world, “Look at me!” Is this acceptable behavior in God’s eyes? Hardly. “Don’t try to impress others, ” He instructs us in (Philippians 2: 3 -Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit but in lowliness of mine-esteem others).

Pride Don’t let selfish ambition determine how we live our lives. Certain types of ambition might be good, such as striving to do well at work in order to be able to assists in supporting others or to provide for yourself and/or your family is good. Selfish ambition is the single-minded pursuit of what you think you deserve, regardless of what it might cost others.

Pride We applaud hard-working, “self-made” men and women. But if that go-getter quality is actually an expression of selfish ambition, it is foolish and ungodly. “If…you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind” (James 3: 14– 16).

Pride The kind of pride that stems from self-righteousness or conceit is sin, however, and God hates it because it is a hindrance to seeking Him. The proud are so consumed with themselves that their thoughts are far from God: “In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. ” Ps. 10: 4 The proud, are so blinded by their pride that they think they have no need of God or, worse, that God should accept them as they are because they deserve His acceptance.

Pride Throughout Scripture we are told about the consequences of pride. Prov. 16: 18 -19 tells us that “pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Better to be lowly in spirit and among the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud. ” Satan was cast out of heaven because of pride Is. 14: 1215. He had the selfish audacity to attempt to replace God Himself as the rightful ruler of the universe. But Satan will be cast down to hell in the final judgment of God. For those who rise up in defiance against God, there is nothing ahead but disaster Is. 14: 22

Pride Though the Lord is on high, Yet He regards the lowly; but the proud He knows from afar of. Ps. 138 -6 Likewise younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility for God resist the proud, but gives grace (His favor freely) to the humble. Therefore humble yourselves under the might hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, I Pet. 5: 5 -6

Pride How can pride keep us from gaining somethings we may need?

Pride has kept many people from accepting Jesus Christ as Savior. Admitting sin and acknowledging that in our own strength we can do nothing to inherit eternal life is a constant stumbling block for prideful people. We are not to boast about ourselves; if we want to boast, then we are to proclaim the glories of God. What we say about ourselves means nothing in God’s work. It is what God says about us that makes the difference II Corin. 10: 18

Pride is giving ourselves the credit for something that God has accomplished. Pride is taking the glory that belongs to God alone and keeping it for ourselves. Pride is essentially self-worship. Anything we accomplish in this world would not have been possible were it not for God enabling and sustaining us. “What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not? ” I Corin. 4: 7. That is why we give God the glory—

Pride Jesus Himself said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him, ” puffing up of the soul” or “loftiness, pride” II Corin. 12: 20. Nothing more than an overt display of one’s sense of self-importance it’s all about me” mindset that says, “The world revolves around me” Prov. 21: 24 -A proud and haughty man (scoffer). He acts with arrogant pride.

Pride Jesus taught us to put others before self: “But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. Paul echoed these same sentiments in his letter to the church in Philippi: “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves” Phil. 2: 3. This is a vast contrast from the “dog-eat-dog, ” competitive nature of our world today.

Pride Where the world pushes us to strive to reach the top and says that “he who has the most toys wins, ” Jesus commands us to be different: “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted” Luke 14: 1; James 4: 6 God gives us two promises. First, that the arrogant will be punished Prov 16: 5; Is 13: 11, and, second, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (1 Peter 5: 5 cf. Prov 3: 34

Pride The tragedy is that pride blinds us to our faults. More than that, pride blinds us to our need for God. Instead, we become self-confident and independent, and we see no reason to humble ourselves before God or seek His wisdom and help. But pride is a dead-end road, and eventually it catches up with us. life’s greatest joy comes from knowing Christ and putting our lives and our futures into His hands.

Pride There is a good reason why the Bible warns us against pride. Pride is evil because it deafens the soul to God. Pride shuts down our spiritual hearing; the guidance which we need is lost, and our life journey heads toward selfdestruction. Dan. 4” 27 -37 Pride blinds the mind to God's guidance. Pride closes the ears to God's warnings. Pride destroys the proud.

Pride As seriously dangerous as pride is, it’s equally hard to spot. When it comes to diagnosing our hearts, those of us who have the disease of pride have a challenging time identifying our sickness. Pride infects our eyesight, causing us to view ourselves through a lens that colors and distorts reality. Pride will paint even our ugliness in sin as beautiful and commendable.

Pride We can’t conclude that we don’t struggle with pride because we don’t see pride in our hearts. The comfortable moments when I pat myself on the back for how well I am doing are the moments that should alarm me the most. I need to reach for the glasses of Christ-like humility, remembering that nothing good dwells in my flesh, and search my heart for secret pride and its symptoms.

Pride By God’s grace, we can turn once again to the glorious gospel in which we stand make much of him even through identifying our pride in all its hiding places inside of us. Just as my concealed pride once moved me toward death, so the acknowledgement of my own pride moves me toward life by causing me to cling more fiercely to the righteousness of Christ. Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! Ps. 139: 23– 24
