Glare Control – UGR Explained Unified Glare Rating (UGR) is method to predict experiences

Glare Control – UGR Explained Unified Glare Rating (UGR) is method to predict experiences of glare by a large number of users. The lower the value = less discomfort glare experienced by the observers. Used extensively in Europe, particularly office spaces. In general, UGR increases (= glare predictably worse) with: • Increase contrast between the luminance of the luminaire and the background luminance; • Decreasing distance from direct line of sight; • Increasing high angle brightness of the luminaire as measured by mean luminance between 45 degrees and 85 degrees in cd/m 2. The European Lighting Guide for Work Places 1 sets the following UGR limits (note: there are no equivalent limits in NA): • • 1 2 ≤ 16 for technical drawings 2; ≤ 19 for general classroom and office work – reading, writing, computer work. 2 Guide to DIN EN 12464 -1 Indoor Workplace Lighting, 2 nd Corrected Edition UGR values measured at 4 Hx 8 H with spacing to height ratio of 0. 25 H Critical zone for glare
