THE PELOPONNESIAN WAR n Sparta issues ultimatum: You must free all cities under Athenian control. Athens refuses. The War begins in 431 B. C. E. and lasts 27 years. n Sparta lays siege to Athens. Plague strikes Athens and 1 in 4 Athenians die. n Athens loses much of its military power by a foolish venture to conquer Syracuse and deprive Sparta of its grain from Sicily.

Persians provide funds to Sparta for building a navy to prolong the war and weaken the Greek city-states. n Sparta wins and orders Athens to tear down the “Long Walls”. It is a humiliating defeat for proud Athens.
