Open Government in Ontario A Government Priority In 2013, Premier Wynne launched Open Government in Ontario and established the Open Government Engagement Team to determine how the province could move forward with this transformation. Ontario used the team’s recommendations to help inform its Open Government Action Plan, based on three streams of Open Government: Open Dialogue, Open Data and Open Information. “Our Open Government initiative will help create the transparent, accessible government that the people of Ontario deserve. ” - Premier Kathleen Wynne, October 2013 2

What is open data? 1. Data is facts, figures and statistics objectively measured according to a standard or scale, such as frequency, volumes or occurrences, but does not include information. 2. Open data is data that meets these requirements: • Open License: datasets must be published under the Open Government Licence - Ontario • Open Access: datasets should be free to download via the internet and should be easily accessible. • Open Format: datasets should be machine-readable, platform independent, vendor-neutral and standardized. 7
