Open. Food. TOx and the Comprehensive Food Consumption Database European Food Safety Authority Op-datathon
Open Food. TOx How did you produce the data? Editorial: Open. Food. Tox: EFSA's open source toxicological database on chemical hazards in food and feed Further development and update of EFSA's Chemical Hazards Database (NP/EFSA/EMRISK/2012/01) 2
Open Food. TOx Why is this data important? Searchable overview of chemical risk assessments performed by EFSA with links back to the original published output 3
Open Food. TOx What could be improved in the dataset and what are its limitations? The information in the database was manually extracted by contractors from the published PDFs 4
EFSA COMPREHENSIVE EUROPEAN FOOD CONSUMPTION DATABASE Member States organizations Since 2010 EFSA collected food consumption data: n from 24 -hour recall or dietary record method n at individual level n most recent data within each country n random sample at national level n different age classes, from infants to elderly 5
MAGNITUDE OF THE CONSUMPTION DATABASE Number of Member States Dietary surveys Population groups Subjects Different national food codes Different standard food codes Consumption records 23 51 128 94, 532 127, 912 1, 578 10, 470, 332 6
POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS Different consumption patterns between countries can simply be induced by the survey methodology Examples of differences in survey methodology: • 24 h dietary recall vs. food record • from 1 to 7 days per subject • sample size and sampling design • week end days not always evenly represented • seasonality not always covered • body weight and height measured or estimated • food classification 7
WHAT’S ON THE MENU IN EUROPE? Within the EU Menu project EFSA aims to collect food consumption data at EU level: • in different age classes (from infants to elderly) • in all Member States (min. 80, 000 subjects) • using methods allowing the comparison of the results from different Member States Harmonised food consumption data in EFSA by 2022 8
USE OF THE CONSUMPTION DATA Recent requests related to studies on: • chronic diseases • childhood obesity • carbon foot print • eating disorders, e. g. orthorexia • … n Pesticide r esidues n Contamin ants n Natural toxins n Additive s n Food con tact materia ls n Nutrient s n Enzyme s n Flavourin gs n Feed ad ditives n … 9
European Food Safety Authority What you think the datasets could still reveal, e. g. if combined with other data or new technologies? How to present data to the European Consumer without losing the scientific context? 10
