Offensive Zone Entry and Special Teams
Goals of Team Offense -Quick exits from the D-Zone -Quick counter or transition attacks in Neutral Zone -Flood support to puck carrier entering O-Zone
O-Zone Entry -Tight area play -Creates time and space -Creates 2 v 1 situation -Puck carrier creates options
Puck Carrier (F 1) Options Middle of Ice -F 1 with puck drives on D, if given space, take it -D is tight, drop or chunk for F 2 and middle drive to make space for F 2
F 1 Options Outside the Dots -F 1 always reads D and tries to get to middle of ice -If D is wide or soft, F 1 keeps puck to middle = good scoring chance -If D is in good position or tight, chip or drop = middle drive to net
F 2 Options -Always support outside hip of F 1 -Get the puck to the net or look for late players to the zone - Don’t skate into the corner with the puck
Special Teams Power Play • Personnel/Players • What strategy best fits your players • Freedom vs. Structure
Personnel Number your position so players can learn spots and become interchangeable or can fill in when injuries or penalties arise – 1 and 2 – skilled players, with the ability to walk off the boards, able to handle the puck on their backhand – 3 disciplined player, not afraid to take abuse in front of the net, understands the back door option – 4 good shot, one-timer guy, not afraid to let it rip – 5 safe hockey player, with good patience
Strategy Options - give and go out of the corner - Box and 1 - Overload - Umbrella - 3 across
• No matter what strategy you use these rules apply • Shoot, Shoot • Don‘t forget your zone entry it’s ok to score on the rush • In the zone tape to tape passes, one touch passes to make defenders commit or get out of position and create space, don’t pass through people • In the zone always out number the opponent on loose pucks • (help, help)
PP Breakout Time and Space Create Options Teach Players to find space Bring the puck up the middle of the rink Don’t Dump the puck (controlled turn-over) Always have enough options players coming back to the puck (support) • It is ok to pass it backwards to create options • • •
Penalty Kill Personnel is important • PK is hard work • Smart players that will do their job • Disciplined Players • Shot blockers
PK Rules • • • Always keep your feet Pressure inside out good angles Sticks in lanes and on the ice Clear puck to the outside use the glass Never, never give up the middle (just like your D-zone coverage)
PK strategies • Tight Box • Box with pressure • Diamond (learn to rotate)
PK Neutral Ice Forecheck or Forecheck • Rules – Make puck carrier pick a side – Make puck carrier dump the puck – If you get beat work hard to get back to the middle and take away lanes
PK neutral ice options • 1 -1 -2 • 1 -3 • 1 -2 -1
Face-offs • Treat your face-offs like special teams • Practice your face-offs • Make sure everyone knows everyone’s responsibility • Make sure your wings can take draws • You can dictate the O-zone face-off, have a plan • D-zone face-off account for every opposing player
Drills • • North Star Drill (zone entry) Wild Warm-up 2 on 1 Montreal Drill 2 on 2 conditioner Tire drill PP with PK guys with foot in tire (one touch) 3 on 2 Jets drill
