Aims of today: *To become familiar with the expectations of the Numeracy framework for the nursery and reception. *To gain ideas and activities you can do at home to help your child develop their numeracy skills. *To become more aware of how maths is taught within our school setting.

What are the expectations set by Welsh Assembly Government for our children when they are in Nursery and Reception in Maths? Within numeracy we expect learners to become accomplished in: * * Developing numerical reasoning Using number skills Using measuring skills Using data skills.

Only looking at the skills they need to know in Nursery and Reception. These skills are what drives planning, activities and questioning.

*Teaching Strategies

Numicon Use to represent numbers visually Rhymes and Songs For ordering and sequencing- counting on and back. Five little ducks. . Three blind mice. . 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 once I caught a fish alive. . Five little monkeys. . Five little speckled frogs. . Ten in a bed. . This old man. . One potato, two potatoes three potatoes four. . Three little kittens.

Teacher led Maths Continuous Provision around the classroom - Focused, questionnaire, challenging and focus on vocabulary -Purposely set up activities Focusses on the Numeracy statements in the LNF. Questioning is specific and focusses on the use of the mathematical vocabulary. Used to identify misconceptions, challenge more able and support learning difficulties.

Prepositional Language Age and time passing Using technology

Represent numbers with symbols and items Children can make pictures- just cut out shapes so they can make them Shop- allows money coins to be introduced, till shows number representation
