Notes for Teachers Remove this slide before sending home. This resource, using the story, “Croc and Bird by Alexis Deacon”, helps children to explore friendship, celebrate differences and identify the skills needed to be a good friend. Children can complete tasks and then create a recipe for friendship. Sensitivity, awareness and understanding of your class and community is always essential before exploring any activities relating to identity, for example for Looked After Children. This is even more important currently when children are learning at home so this lesson is fully adaptable so that you can change it to suit the needs of your class and the way you are delivering the lesson. This resource is fully adaptable and can be changed to suit the needs of your class. L. O. To understand how to be a good friend
First, let’s listen to a story…. Click the link below and watch the second video “Croc and Bird read by Alexis Deacon”
In the story, the differences between the characters did not stop them from being friends, in fact it made them better friends. What are the benefits of being different from your friends?

Think of one of your friends. Find all the things that are the same between the two of you. Can you find the differences too?
What does it mean to be a good friend?
Here are some ideas. A friend will share things with you! A friend helps you if they can. A friend makes you smile and laugh.
What do you think are the key ingredients needed for a friendship? What quantities of these ingredients will be needed for your potion? How do you think you could combine these ingredients?
What will you put in your potion? What shape bottle will you keep it in? What colour will your potion be? What will your potion be called?
First, let’s take a look at an example, to help you plan how you will create yours. . Which ideas will you use or “magpie” in your recipe?
Recipes start with a list of ingredients. Then they have a set of instructions to explain the method you need to follow.
Friendship Potion Now, it is your turn to write your recipe. Think about what ingredients you will need. Decide the quantities of each ingredient. Then decide the order you will add them and HOW you will add them; (Will you pour, mix or sprinkle? Do you need to chop, dice or peel anything? ) Don’t forget, once it is made put it in a bottle and keep it safe! When you have finished please share it with me.
