Sensitivity, awareness and understanding of your class and community is always essential before exploring any activities relating to identity, for example for Looked After Children. This is even more important currently when children are learning at home so this lesson is fully adaptable so that you can change it to suit the needs of your class and the way you are delivering the lesson. L. O To create an Identity Map which reflects your identity
Which things are most important to you? family things I like to do friends places I like to visit
Have a look at these statements. Which ones are most important to you? Which ones are least important to you? Are there any you think that lots of people would find important?
The things (and people) we find important can help shape who each of us is as a person. Sometimes, we might use the word ‘identity’ to describe this. Your identity is who you are- your likes, your dislikes, things that are important to you, people who matter to you-and the list could go on! No two people are ever completely the same, which is great! Can you think of some reasons as to why being different is a good thing?
There are different ways we can use to record all of the many things that help to shape our identity. One way is by creating an Identity Map. Let’s look at some examples… Meet Uzair!
Meet Grace!
Meet Ameerah!
Having had a look at the different Identity Maps, what did you find out about each person? What would you like others to find out about you?
Before you create an Identity Map of your own, let’s spend some time thinking about what things you would like to include on your map. Here are some ideas to get you started: - your age - games you like to play books you like to read things you like to do in your spare time things you have done that you are proud of places you like to visit food you like to eat place you were born people you like to spend time with your favourite film songs you like to sing
L. O. To create an Identity Map that reflects your identity 1. Think carefully about the things that are most important to you or are an important part of who you are. 2. Mind-map these ideas using pictures or words or both.
