Notes for Teachers This resource encourages pupils to think about things they are thankful for and explores the positives towards developing a habit of noticing them and showing gratitude towards them. Having an ‘attitude for gratitude’ can not only make us more thankful about the things, people and places we have around us, it can also make us feel great. Sensitivity, awareness and understanding of your class and community is always essential before exploring any activities relating to identity, for example for Looked After Children. This is even more important currently when children are learning at home so this lesson is fully adaptable so that you can change it to suit the needs of your class and the way you are delivering the lesson. L. O. To think about ways to build an ‘attitude for gratitude’.
An attitude for gratitude means making it a habit to express thankfulness in all parts of your life, on a regular basis, for both the big and small things.
What does habit mean?
A habit is something that we do regularly. We do it so often that we don’t always think about doing it. You might have heard people talking about bad habits but there are good habits too, like saying ‘thank you’ when someone holds open a door for you.
What good habits can you think of?
When we notice the good things that happen to us and around us, it helps to make us happier. Having a habit of noticing these good things and feeling thankful for them, is what we mean by having ‘an attitude for gratitude’. Look around you now. What do you notice that you could be thankful or grateful for?
Share things that you have noticed with an adult in your house. Ask them what things that they can notice. Can you spot any similarities?
Here are some things that you might have noticed… A favourite item of clothing you love to wear The people that you live with in your home because they make you smile Food that you enjoy eating The great outdoors! A game or book that you find interesting
1. Find a paper plate or draw around a real plate to get a circle on a piece of paper. 2. Draw a picture of yourself in the middle of your circle. 3. Split the circle up into five or six different sections by drawing lines. 4. Think of things at home that you are grateful for. 5. Write one thing in each section. 6. Draw a picture to go with each sentence. We can learn a lot about who we are by thinking about what we are grateful for.
Why not keep a gratitude diary? In it, you can add something you are grateful for every day. When your diary is complete, you can look back and see all the things that have made you happy.
Write the month here Each day, add in something that you are grateful for. Write the number for each day of the month in the small box. Remember to start number one on the right day!
When we are grateful or thankful for something someone has done, we can show that we ‘appreciate’ them, by giving them a compliment. Everyone likes getting compliments! Who could you give a compliment to?
Well done! I really liked how you did that! I like your smile! You have really good ideas! The food you made was delicious- thank you!
How might developing an attitude for gratitude help us all to live together?
How could you finish this sentence starter? If everyone had an ‘attitude for gratitude’ then…….
If everyone had an ‘attitude for gratitude’ then……. When you have thought of a good way to finish the sentence why not spread a little happiness and share it with people you know. You can also share this with the rest of the class when we are back in school.
