Priorities for Intramural Research* • Innovative, high-risk, high-impact, from laboratory to clinical research and training • Interdisciplinary research and training • Immediate public health needs • Intramural-extramural collaborations • Shared resources to achieve efficiencies • Tenure-track investigators • Enhanced workforce diversity *Presented to OMB and Advisory Committee to the Director, NIH

New Trans-NIH Activities that Affect Tenure-track Investigators • Clarification of criteria for tenure for investigators involved in multi-disciplinary scientific teams (clinical research, epidemiology, integrative biology, etc. ) • Ways to encourage high-risk, high impact research by tenure-track investigators • Trans-NIH training and scientific initiatives • The trans-NIH course for tenure-track investigators • Tabulation of approval requirements for official duty activities

Ways to encourage high-risk, high impact research by tenure-track investigators • Assign team of

Ways to encourage high-risk, high impact research by tenure-track investigators • Assign team of NIH senior investigators for mentoring, advice • Allow assignment of time-limited staff scientists to help with high-risk work • Discuss unique features of intramural high-risk, high impact science with BSC chairs and members

Clarification of criteria for tenure for investigators involved in multidisciplinary scientific teams • A

Clarification of criteria for tenure for investigators involved in multidisciplinary scientific teams • A need was identified to encourage team science by clarifying that team scientists on the tenuretrack could achieve tenure • Criteria are similar to those for investigators working independently--identifiable, distinctive, creative contributions to high-quality innovative research • Details being developed in collaboration with the Central Tenure Committee and the Scientific Directors under the guidance of Arlyn Garcia. Perez, OIR

Interdisciplinary Research • Physical and computer science in biology – NIST/NIH Program • Translational research – Ph. D. s in translational research (“demystifying medicine”) – Physician-scientists in clinical and laboratory research

Bench-to-Bedside Proposals • Competitive intramural applications that pair a laboratory and a clinical investigator, involving intramural scientists from different ICs, or intramural and extramural scientists • Extension in the future to proposals from extramural investigators to work with intramural scientists to use Clinical Center facilities

Trans-NIH Intramural Research Initiatives • We are identifying new and creative ways to take

Trans-NIH Intramural Research Initiatives • We are identifying new and creative ways to take advantage of special features of the intramural research program • 80 intramural scientists from all ICs are meeting in focus groups to identify areas of possible emphasis • Extramural scientific leaders will help set priorities for these new initiatives

The Trans-NIH Retreat for Tenure-track Investigators • Two-day course held twice yearly at Gettysburg

The Trans-NIH Retreat for Tenure-track Investigators • Two-day course held twice yearly at Gettysburg conference center • Outside facilitator and NIH senior staff (Joan Schwartz, OIR, presiding) • Covers leadership training, lab management, dealing with conflict, mentoring, BSC/site visits, criteria for tenure
