Front Cover This magazine has chosen to use a pale pink background colour on

Front Cover This magazine has chosen to use a pale pink background colour on there front cover, this is a very effective colour to use as they may wish to be aiming this issue at women and by using the colour pink it would attract more female readers than male. Also the colour is very eye-catching, and matches the blue and yellow colours used on the rest of the cover effectively. The design of the front cover was very effective as the masthead was placed at the top so that the reader can easily see the name of the magazine. Also they have placed the main coverline on the left of the magazine, as this is where the eye naturally looks first and will be able to easily see who the interview is with at a glance and this will encourage prospective buyers to purchase the magazine. The image was cleverly placed also as it is directly next to the main coverline so the eye would probably look to this next and therefore encourage people to buy the magazine further. The main image they have chosen to use is one of singer Katy Perry who the main article is about and that will easily tell the reader that at a glance. Another reason for them featuring Katy Perry and choosing to on the same issue use very feminine colours as this is who a lot of women will aspire to be and this will attract many women into purchasing this magazine. They have also dressed and accessorized her in greens, browns and pinks which match the rest of the cover very effectively. They have chosen to pose Katy Perry in a seductive position to attract not only female readers, but male readers also. Her hair and make-up is kept very natural as that is the style they have chosen to use for this front cover, however they have used a lot of pink make-up to match with the rest of the cover very effectively.

Front Cover They have chosen to shoot the picture of Katy Perry in a long shot so that the whole of her can be seen and it is more of a natural shot to incorporate with the rest of the front cover. They have also chosen to keep it to a simple coloured background to enable the picture, masthead and coverlines to stand out more, this has worked very effectively. When I look at this cover my eyes are first drawn to the main coverline as it is positioned on the left hand side of the page and therefore that is where my eye is naturally drawn. It then goes straight to the main image, and then lastly to the masthead. The front cover includes many written codes that encourage the reader to read inside. Such as under the main coverline of ‘Katy Perry’ it says ‘inside the court of the new queen of pop’, this will encourage people to read inside to find out more about this artist. Also they have placed an insert next to the main image which includes several artists names, this will encourage people who may not necessarily want to read it because Katy Perry is on the cover, but for one of the artists mentioned within the insert. Within the coverlines they have used some techniques that will make the reader more interested such as colloquial writing and rhetorical questions. I think that the cover gives a very good indication of what is inside and would encourage me to read further. It is designed to appeal to women more than men and I believe they achieved this. It doesn’t address men as much as it is using feminine colours and a main image of a women, therefore men will not be as encouraged to buy. However her pose indicates that men will still be attracted by this magazine and therefore may be inclined to purchasing it.

Contents Page The magazine cover I used with Katy Perry I could not find

Contents Page The magazine cover I used with Katy Perry I could not find the contents page so I chose to instead use another contents page from Billboard magazine as they always follow the same layout. They have very effectively added the billboard charts on the left hand side of the magazine, to inform the readers of the charts at the moment. As this is on the left hand side of the page, the viewers eye will be automatically go to this information. They have also sectioned this off so that the information looks neater and more professional and keeps all the contents information together. They have stuck with the colours of light blue and black throughout the contents page to ensure that the colours match eachother, to give a more professional look to the magazine. They have also added one main image of the artist who is mainly featured directly to the left of the page numbers and information, as this will be a very eyecatching insert into this page. They have also cleverly added the page number underneath this so that the reader will easily be able to depict where the information on this topic is. They have also added further images of other artists and page numbers for the reader to easily depict where that information is also. Overall I think it looks extremely professional and very easy to read as they have stuck to a very minimalistic theme throughout.

Double Page Spread The double page spread cleverly starts on the first page with a main image as the main focus where your eyes are automatically drawn to, this will encourage readers to read the article as it will be very eye-catching and visually interesting. They have also cleverly added the words ‘girlie action’ onto the image, this will further encourage readers, especially female ones to read what the article is about. It then goes onto firstly say in bold letters, ‘Katy Perry’, which will instantly tell the reader what the article is about and will entice them into reading it. Throughout the entire texts it uses a mixture of grey font for the general article, but highlights the important parts in the same bright pink colour of the main image. On the second page there is a further two images, including one of Katy Perry’s music video’s and one of her performing. These will attract the reader into reading this article, as they are very eye-catching, colourful images. The writing on the second page continues the same style and colour theme from the first page, of grey writing and the important parts in bright pink. However, they have included a pull quote under one of the images and chose to put this in a light pink to show that it is more important than the grey writing parts of the article, but the most important part of the pull quote is highlighted using brink pink. They have chosen to use a pull quote as this will attract the reader into further reading the article if the pull quote interests them. Overall I think the layout is very effective and visually interesting, but will again appeal to women readers more than men readers as it even says ‘girlie’ in the main image and uses colours such as pink which are feminine colours. Also it is a feature on a women, and although some men will still read it, it’s more likely to be women.

Front Cover Vibe Magazine has chosen to use a ‘cartoon’ like style to the

Front Cover Vibe Magazine has chosen to use a ‘cartoon’ like style to the front cover of their magazine. Firstly, they have chosen to put a background image of cartoon images, such as clouds and flowers in the background to give the front cover that overall impression. They have also used a gradiated blend of different shades of blue, instead of using just an overall one colour to give a more interesting look to the rest of the background. As they have used a blue background although the main image is of a woman which will attract women to buy the magazine, men will also be drawn to it because of the colour scheme used. The have set the front cover out very effectively as they have chosen to put their masthead across the entire top of the magazine so that it is a main feature and can easily be seen, it is also in a bold font to help further make it an eye-catching feature of the cover. They have chosen to put it in white as this will further convey the boldness of the masthead, and it matches the rest of the colours used on the cover very effectively, as they match the cartoon cloud, the main image and other writing on the cover. The main image This issue of Vibe magazine is featuring is also placed very effectively as it is the main focus of the cover as that is the first artist Nicki Minaj, by featuring a women thing that the eye will be drawn to, as it is in the very centre and although the eye is on their front cover it will attract women naturally drawn to the left side of the page normally, as they have put the coverlines as she will be a role model for some in a small and not eye-catching font size and style, the readers eye will then be women. Although through the main drawn to the main image instead. image of Nicki Minaj men will also be attracted to buying the magazine as they have posed her in a seductive manner to enable the image to attract both genders.

Front Cover The main image also matches the rest of the cover very effectively

Front Cover The main image also matches the rest of the cover very effectively as they have chosen to style her as a ‘cartoon’ as this is theme for the front cover. For example, they have chosen to put an orange wig on her and dress her in cartoon like clothes, to give her a non-naturalistic image which works very effectively on this cover. They have also cleverly placed the main coverline and coverlines surrounding the main image, this is to enable the reader to easily see the information about the articles inside without them being eye-catching. The main coverline is adjacent to the main image so that it can easily be linked to each other and the reader will be able to what the main article is going to be about. The strapline is used very effectively with the rest of the front cover as it says ‘Hip-hops new superwoman to the rescue’, this matches the ‘superhero‘ pose that Nicki Minaj is portraying in the main image. They have also placed several artists names effectively at the top as this will catch the readers attention if they are interested in these artists and will encourage them to purchase the magazine. I think that this front cover is extremely effective as all of the information about the articles inside can easily be seen and will encourage perspective buyers to purchase the magazine. I believe that the magazine also effectively appeals to both men and womens readers as the use of both feminine and masculine colours are used throughout, also the main image further conveys the appeal to both men and women.

Contents Page In this front cover they have chosen to use one main image, whereas other magazines tend to use several images within their contents page. They have also chosen to continue the ‘cartoon’ theme that they used on the front cover, by adding cartoon images onto the main image and surrounding it. Controversially to some similar music magazine contents pages, they have only chosen to put the a few main articles page numbers in and also a brief description about that article. They have stuck to an overall colour scheme of black, white, pink and green throughout the contents page. They have cleverly done this within the main image as she is wearing black and white clothes, and pink and green make-up and accessories. The background is also a gradiated blend of different shades of green, similar to the front cover, to make the background more visually interesting than if they used on shade. Also the article page numbers, headings and writing are in black, white and pink to continue matching the colour scheme. I believe this contents page is very effective as it is a simple layout where the information can easily be seen, however it is still visually interesting.

Double Page Spread In the left page of this double page spread they have

Double Page Spread In the left page of this double page spread they have decided to keep the layout quite simple as the words are the main focus. They have mainly kept the writing in the article black so that the reader is able to easily read it. However they have put the first few words in bright pink to attract the readers eye there first, as it is on the left side of the page the readers eye will be automatically be drawn to that point anyway. They have chosen to put a pull quote as a main focus in the centre of the page also, so that at a glance the reader will be able to see this and will help draw them into further reading the article. The pull quote is surrounded with cartoon images, to match the ongoing style that Vibe have chosen to use throughout the magazine, or just in the sections that include the main featured artist Nicki Minaj. This will enable the pull quote to be very eye-catching and also to make the page more visually interesting than if it was all text. They have chosen to put the pull quote in bright colours of blue and pink, this will also enable it to be seen easily and visually appealing. On the second page of the double page spread they have chosen to just include a large picture of a close up of Nicki Minaj. This will be extremely eye-catching to a perspective reader and will draw them into reading the article. The image also includes a cartoon background of the same gradiated blend of shades of green that was previously used on the contents page, which will link them together.
