How to get in touch • Speak to your child’s teacher on the Year 1 door at the end of the day. • Pass a message on through the staff member on the door in the morning. • Phone to arrange an appointment via the office. • Email parentinbox@brookburn. manchester. sch. uk • Parents’ evenings
We would always ask that, wherever you have a problem or a concern, we as class teachers are your first port of call. We are the staff who work with and know your children better than anyone else and we hope that we would always be able to listen and respond to concerns to remedy any issue. If you do feel that you need to take your concern further, you should speak to the Key Stage 1 Phase Leader – Miss Bergin. Our SENDCo and Deputy Headteachers are always available to offer support, however, discussions at class teacher / phase lead level would always be encouraged before seeking SLT involvement.
School doors open from 8. 50 am. The Year 1 door will be open until 9 am in the morning and it will be locked from 3. 35 pm after school has finished. From Thursday 12 th September, please leave your children at the door and encourage them to be independent in organising their own belongings. We will, of course, be on hand to assist them if they do need any help! If the door is locked, children must register at the school office. A record is kept in the class register of consistently poor punctuality and attendance and parents will be contacted. If your child is experiencing any problems that may be affecting their attendance or punctuality, then please make contact with us so we can offer our support.
- We expect the children to always: Work hard Be Gentle Listen Look after property Be kind and helpful Be honest
We use a traffic light system in class to monitor behaviour and every week a child will be rewarded in Golden Assembly with a certificate. We also use Class Dojo which lets children earn points for working hard.
Some Dates for Your Diary • Individual school photos: 4 th October • Parents’ evening: 15 th and 17 th October • Halloween disco: 24 th October
Homework will be set on a regular basis for all children in Year 1. This will consist of: Sumdog Times Tables Rockstars Letterjoin Reading (at least 10 mins a day) Spellings We ask for your help in supporting children with this work and ensure that books are returned to school promptly (£ 5 cost for lost books). Your children will be given log in details for these wesbites and apps which will be stuck into their reading records.
Spellings will be sent home on Friday to be practiced ready for the following Friday. We would like to promote the importance of homework and would appreciate a small note in the reading records to let us know which website or app your child has been working on each week. Reading books can be changed every day. We encourage the children to bring their reading folder in every day as we will record notes from Guided Reading sessions in their Reading Record if they have brought it.
Mystery Reader Every Thursday we invite a grown up to come and read to the children. The children will not know who it is each week so please keep it a secret! If you would like to be a mystery reader please come and have a quiet word with Miss Hegarty (for 1 B) or Miss Martins (for 1 A) and we will sign you up. Mystery Reader starts at 3 pm on Thursdays so please come to the main office at 2. 55 pm and one of our teaching assistants will come and bring you down to the classroom. Feel free to bring one longer book or a couple of shorter of your choice – we love hearing new stories!

We have school-wide safety features but if anything gets past the filters, children are taught to switch off the screen and tell the teacher immediately. Our digital code: ZIP IT, BLOCK IT, FLAG IT!
