INTERNET What is the internet The internet is the worldwide network of interconnected networks. The internet is available to anyone and it has very few restrictions.

INTRANET What is an intranet? An intranet is a private, secured internal network where employees can create content, get things done and develop their organisation. Within the internet there a large number of intranets. On an intranet there is a certain amount of traffic allowed and the number of visitors is also limited. Only specific information is found on an intranet and lots of aspects are restricted. Where are intranets used? Intranets are again used in workplaces, schools etc. to provide a more secure network to work on.

EXTRANET What is the extranet? An extranet is a private network designed specifically to allow customers, partners, clients etc. to communicate with the company’s employers and employees in a close virtual space. An extranet provides some access of a organisation’s information to people outside the orgainsation but most other information is restricted. Where are extranets used? Extranets are used within companies to connect the company to its customers, clients etc.

WEB PAGES Web pages can either be static or dynamic. Dynamic web pages change their content regularly. The dynamic web page is re-built every time the page reloads based on the location. An example of a dynamic website is BBC. co. uk which updates its web page all the time to show the latest weather, news, sport etc. Static web pages do not change their content until they are completely redesigned. An example of a static web page is the National Trust website.

BLOGS Blogs were originally personal web pages where the owner would comment on aspects of their life or another topic. Nowadays, blogs are more themed to subjects such as politics, fashion and literature. They are now used by businesses to show their skills by passing on content to others.

PODCASTS A podcast can be a sound file or video file that can be downloaded or streamed to a device. Podcasts usually come in chunks or episodes are can be themed about almost any topic.

STREAMED AUDIO AND VIDEO Streamed content is live and shows events as they are happening. Streaming requires high bandwidth so with a bad connection the stream would tend to be bad quality. Streamed video can also be available after it has stopped streaming for download or just to watch again.

SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS Social media allows users to interact, share comments and views and generally be social online. Social media has become almost a gateway for some people to the rest of the internet, allowing them access to content they wouldn’t usually see.

DOCUMENT STORES Cloud(google drive –drop box etc. ) based servers which store information in a remote place that can be accessed at any time.
