IELTS EXAM: SPEAKING
WHAT IS THE IELTS EXAM? International English Language Testing System that students are required to pass in order to be eligible to study abroad in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, England etc. What does it test? Four English areas: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking
WHY DO YOU WANT TO TAKE THE IELTS EXAM?
IELTS SPEAKING BREAKDOWN 11 -14 minute three-part oral interview Part 1: Introduction and interview (4 -5 minutes) Part 2: Individual long turn (3 -4 minutes) Part 3: Two-way discussion (4 -5 minutes)
PART 1: INTRODUCTION AND INTERVIEW (4 -5 minutes) Asked a number of general questions such as; Tell me about yourself Tell me about your family What are you studying? What do you want to do in the future? What are your hobbies?
PART 2: INDIVIDUAL LONG TURN (3 -4 minutes) Examiner will give you a card that asks about a person, place, event or object 1 minute preparation time 1 -2 minutes speaking time Examiner asks you two rounding off questions
PART 3: TWO-WAY DISCUSSION (4 -5 minutes) Discuss issues related to topic on the card Less personal e. g. Part 2 may be about a teacher you had at school Part 3 may be about the education in your country
MARKING PERFORMANCE IS ASSESSED ON THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: Fluency and Coherence (No long pauses) Pronunciation (Easy to understand & English pronunciation features) Grammatical Range and Accuracy (Wide range of structures with few errors) Lexical Resources (Vocabulary) The overall result is translated into a score on the IELTS nine-band score.
TIPS: IMPROVING YOUR PERFORMANCE You can ask the examiner to repeat the question Record yourself or practice speaking on a variety of topics Vocabulary - don’t use unfamiliar, long words if you are not sure of their meaning. If you cannot remember the exact word you want, paraphrase and try to express your idea using similar words. Practice making notes on various topics
TIPS: IMPROVING YOUR PERFORMANCE Try to develop your answers instead of one word answers Speak loudly and clearly into the recorder. Avoid using slang and abbreviations. Do not use memorised chunks of language Be relaxed and try to be friendly
