COLOR POINTS OF THE HORSE
DORSAL STRIPE
FIVE BASE COAT COLORS 1. BLACK
2. BROWN Dark brown may be differentiated from black because there will be brown hairs on the muzzle.
3. BAY Bay horses are reddish brown with black points.
4. CHESTNUT (SORREL) Mane and tail are the same color or lighter, never black, which is bay.
5. WHITE White horses have pink skin. If the skin is dark, it is gray.
THREE EPISTATIC MODIFIERS (GENETIC) 1. GRAY Horse is born white and progressively turns gray and then white as it gets older.

SIX WHITE COLOR PATTERNS • 1. Piebald – black with white spots or white with black spots
• 2. Skewbald – white with any other color
• 3. Pinto – large spots (tobiano and overo are types of pintos)
• Tobiano – color on white; white goes on the “TOP”
• Overo – white on color (white does not go “OVER” – “OVER – NO!”)
