HCC at Middle College High School: a partnership with Doctors 4 Diversity at UCI Medical School and UCI Medical Center • Program staffed by volunteer medical students and medical professionals to provide an opportunity for disadvantaged high school students to learn about career opportunities that exist in health care if they stay in school. • Curriculum provided by a non-profit organization that supports 13 programs nationwide • In California, two other programs are currently running: • Stanford Medicine with East Palo Alto academy • USC Keck School of Medicine with Orthopaedic Medical Magnet High School • We are third! UCI Medical School with Middle College High School

Last year, we heard lectures from medical professionals about their careers, worked in groups

Last year, we heard lectures from medical professionals about their careers, worked in groups to explore different health care topics, and participated in a suturing workshop. In April and May, we participated in two virtual workshops on Zoom.

A highlight last year was the day students in HCC were able to participate

A highlight last year was the day students in HCC were able to participate in a suture lab, guided by the medical students and surgical residents.

 • Longitudinal program starting with current 10 th grade students, to be continued

• Longitudinal program starting with current 10 th grade students, to be continued through 11 th and 12 th grade • Current 10 th, 11 th and 12 th grade students will be welcomed to participate • Monthly classroom sessions (~2 hours) consisting of virtual workshops with a focus this year on epidemiology related to the pandemic and public health. The curriculum will evolve and include learning about career opportunities as well.

MISSION The Mission of the Health Career Collaborative is to provide mentorship, engaging health curriculum, and exposure to health careers to high school students from lowincome, underrepresented minority communities. GOALS: 1. engage students in project-based learning with a focus on science and health care related issues 2. encourage students to graduate from high school (current graduation rates at partner high schools 50 -60%) 3. model a diverse range of health-related career pathways 4. empower students to identify the most pressing health needs in their community and engage students in community-based health promotion activities

So, are you interested? Okay! Here is the commitment we need from you: 1. You will attend all of the sessions (once a month from October to May) a. Sessions are from 2: 30 p. m. until 4: 00 p. m. on Fridays once per month. b. By attending all of the sessions consistently, you will earn a certificate and you may use the hours toward your AVID community service/college and career exploration requirement. 2.
