Goals & Dreams
Goals vs. Dreams • Goals are specific and attainable in the short and long term – For example “I will turn in all my missing work by Friday” Dreams are unspecific and vague. --For example– “I want to have a successful business. ”
You can make your dreams reality if you set a series of small, attainable goals.
How do you set goals? • The easiest way to set a goal is to decide what you want to accomplish, and then make sure your goal is SMART
What are SMART Goals? S – Specific M – Measurable A – Achievable R – Relevant T – Time-bound
Is this Goal SMART? I will lose weight. Specific? No Measurable? No Achievable? Who knows? Relevant? Maybe Time-bound? No
Is this Goal SMART? To improve my health, I will lose 10 pounds by April 15, 2009. Specific? Yes (lose 10 pounds) Measurable? Yes (compare weight before & after) Achievable? Yes (about 1 pound a week) Relevant? Yes (lose weight to improve health) Time-bound? Yes (by August 15, 2004)
Now you try! • On your notes paper (#6) decide if the following goal is SMART by using the chart provided. • “To improve my grades, I will use parent portal to determine if I have any missing assignments, and will turn in any missing assignments by Friday of this week. ”
#6 • “To improve my grades, I will use parent portal to determine if I have any missing assignments, and will turn in any missing assignments by Friday of this week. ” Specific? Measurable? Now try #7 • On your notes paper (#7) decide if the following goal is SMART by using the chart provided. • “I will raise my grades by the end of the semester”
#6 “I will raise my grades by the end of the semester” Specific? No (raise which grades? To what? ) Measurable? Kind of Achievable? Who knows? Relevant? Yes Time-bound? Sort of—end of semester is kind of vague
