FEATURES OF TRANSLATION OF THE OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS
An essential feature of the style ― the use of words in their logical dictionary meaning
The style of official documents abounds in clichés, set expressions, terms: • extra revenue ― додатковий дохід; • taxable capacities ― податкоспроможність; • face value (financial) ― номінальна вартість; • summary procedure ― наказне провадження.
The texts of official documents are characterized by high frequency of using nouns and by low fre quency of using adjectives, relative adjectives are used mainly in set phrases: • social protection, regulatory enactment, financial aid – соціальний захист, норма тивний акт, матеріальна допомога
When it comes to grammar, one of the essential features of this style is the conciseness of the contents and the rigid organization of grammatical structures.
• Most data are introduced through noun structures (surname, occupation of father/mother), participial (“Data concerning smth. ” instead of “Data which concern”) and impersonal structures (“This is to certify”, “The stamp duty. . . was charged ”). • Impersonality of the texts is their common feature. • Communicative strategies used are informative and directive.
The following structural features are a sign of a good translation →
• retaining semantic unity of the source text in its translated version; • keeping the normalized construction of a text; • using proper chains of connectors (as a result of, as the consequence of which etc. ); →
• taking care of the unity by using typical sentences marking the beginning and the end of a text; • min ding proper text division by using formal connectors like separate paragraphs, or indexing the sequence of steps of argumentation.
