Chapter Involvement – What We’ve Done Academic Peer Mentoring Individual mentoring allowing students referred by the Office of Academic Excellence to be paired with a SSP member to aid them in establishing good academic practices Workshops focusing on note taking, time management, test taking strategies, wellbeing, and course specific tips Faculty vs. Student Spelling Bee Fundraiser Sponsoring the event to raise funds for the Gaffney Free Clinic (A student-run clinic supervised by the chair of underserved care- Dr. Petra Warren)

Chapter Involvement – what we’ve done Journal Club Each block, an interested Sigma Phi member works with faculty to choose a pertinent journal club topic and articles. Members lead small groups of students to work through the article before coming together as a whole and learning about it with the faculty present. Study Skills Panel A comprehensive review of several different study tactics by individuals from our chapter in an effort to strengthen the abilities of our peers.

Chapter Involvement – What We’ve Done Near Peer Tutor Program A 1 v 1 tutoring program led by OMS-II Sigma Phi members for OMSI students. Board Review Support Groups Establishing a community of students helping students to both set and achieve goals together.

Chapter Involvement – 2019 -2020 plans Weeks of Welcome Event – SSP Social The purpose of this event is to allow incoming first years the opportunity to socialize and get to know their classmates, as well as the OMS-II students. This opportunity will be primarily used to explain the mission of Sigma Phi and to reiterate that it is a resource for the OMS-I students to utilize. Specialty Organization Liaisons OMS-II students in Sigma Phi with additional affiliations in other organizations will be selected in order to facilitate communication between the institution's Specialty Organizations and Sigma Phi. In selecting a liaison for each organization, Sigma Phi will be notified in the event other club require additional resources or volunteers to assist in the respective events. The objective is to facilitate communication and fellowship within the institution, while ultimately providing an effective method to provide comprehensive academic support.

Chapter Involvement – 2019 -2020 plans “Guide through OMS-I” Document OMS-II members will provide guidance and feedback regarding the various experiences of OMS-I. The results will be compiled into a comprehensive list of advice for incoming OMS-I students Guidance documents will be provided for: Medical school in general, blocks 1 -4, procedural skills and standardized patient encounters. A similar document with information from OMS-III/IV students will also be created to offer guidance to OMS-II students regarding board preparation, clinical rotation sites, and advice for blocks 5 -8. Volunteer Service at St. Luke’s Free Clinic Sigma sigma phi will provide volunteer opportunities at St. Luke’s Free Clinic. The majority of this service will be in the form of scribing experience. OMS-II Sigma Phi members with scribe experience will have the opportunity to train other students without formal scribe experience.
