Astérix chez les Pictes

This is how Astérix started in 1959, in a magazine called Pilote. It is based on the story of the Romans and their conquest of Gaul, which is now France This is T Astérix is intended to be funny, so the history is not always accurate. Here we see how the village of Gaulois is holding out against the Romans.

But before we concentrate on Astérix, let’s go back even further than the Romans and think about the history of comics. Some people say we have always been telling stories with pictures, going back to cave dwellers. This example is from caves in the south of France.

The Bayeux Tapestry This example is from 1067 and tells in pictures the story of how the William the Conqueror and the Normans (i. e. in the north of France) invaded England the battle of Hastings in 1066

Some say comics started in the 19 th century when more and more people could read It was now possible to create thousands of copies of any book, even with pictures. This example comes from Switzerland: don’t forget that France is not the only country where people speak French.

Although we know the first comic really came from Scotland!! It was called ‘The Glasgow Looking Glass’ in 1825.

One thing is sure, comic books or ‘bandes dessinées’ are very popular in France and Belgium. These are just some of the Astérix albums.

Astérix is the small but clever one….
