“CAP MODEL ROCKETRY PROGRAM” What is Model Rocketry? • It is the designing, building,

“CAP MODEL ROCKETRY PROGRAM” What is Model Rocketry? • It is the designing, building, and flying of small rockets made of paper, plastic, balsa wood or any other nonmetallic product. • It is “rocket science” in miniature. The same designing, building, and launch operations skills needed to launch “real” rockets apply to model rocketry. 13

“CAP MODEL ROCKETRY PROGRAM” • CAP Model Rocketry Program is the next step after

“CAP MODEL ROCKETRY PROGRAM” • CAP Model Rocketry Program is the next step after studying Module 4 -“Rockets” of the Aerospace Dimensions book • It is designed to cover the basics of rocket history, rocket science, rocket building, and the safe launch and recovery of model rockets • It is designed to get both cadets and Officers working together • Upon completion, cadets will be recognized as having leadership skills in the field of model rocketry 12

“CAP MODEL ROCKETRY PROGRAM” 6 Time Frame: • 9 classes or build sessions and 2 out of meeting activities to complete the program • We will begin in January ’ 08 and finish May ’ 08 Costs: • Approximately $40. 00 for all rockets and motors • Squadron will pick up ONE-HALF the costs for cadets (Officer’s will pay full costs) • Squadron will pick up ancillary costs (building supplies, recovery wadding, etc). • Actual cost for cadets, $20. 00

“CAP MODEL ROCKETRY PROGRAM” TARC • If there is further interest in CAP rocketry,

“CAP MODEL ROCKETRY PROGRAM” TARC • If there is further interest in CAP rocketry, the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) is available • Every year the challenge is a little different. Basically a rocket is designed and built by a team to meet a specific goal such as carrying a specific type of payload to a specific altitude, and a specific flight duration • There are local/regional competitions. Regional winners go to the national competition where college scholarship monies are awarded to the national TARC winners 5
