Structure of NVQs • Made up of mandatory and optional units • Pure knowledge units e. g. A&P • Mixture of knowledge and competence • Performance related learning outcomes linked to assessment requirements
Structure of NVQs Learning outcomes • These outcomes set out what a learner is expected to know, understand or be able to perform as a result of the process of learning • They are expressed as ‘The Learner Will’…. know…. . be able to….
Structure of NVQs Performance Assessment Requirements: • The assessment criteria of a unit specify the standard a learner is expected to meet to demonstrate through performance that a learning outcome has been achieved. They are expressed in the syllabus as ‘The Learner will be able to’. • Linked to the performance based evidence there must be evidence that the minimum stated number of assessment requirements that have to be achieved
Types of NVQ evidence • Observation of Performance OB • Recognition of prior learning RPL • Worksheet WS • Log Book LB • Witness Testimony WT • Simulation SIM • Supplementary Questions SQ • Discussions D • Case Study CS • Work Product WP • Reflective Account RA • Storyboard SB

Delivering NVQ Certificates and Diplomas
Stage 1 – Create an Action Plan • Planning is crucial • Stage 1 −(Ensure the learners have access to work) −Unit C 22 Promote Health and Safety in Active Leisure and recreation −Assessment plan paper based/electronic plan via Moodle (learner/IV/EQA need to have access to the plan
Group Activity • Observation of a role play session on how to plan with a Learner to meet the learning outcomes and assessment requirements for unit C 22, using work based evidence • Action planning evidence required to cover unit C 22 between an Assessor, Learner and site Manager.
Stage 2 – Assessment of evidence generated • Assessing the evidence generated by the learner and apply VARCS to it • Signposting any evidence that can be kept in the workplace • Feeding back to the learner on how they have met the learning outcomes and assessment requirements for unit C 22
Group Activity • Referencing in all the evidence generated by the learner. Each piece of evidence should be individually numbered • Feeding back to the learner on how the standards have been met, using the assessor comments box or DVR • Updating the Witness Status list if its required
Stage 3 – Generate a New Action Plan • Planning with the learner how you will assess any gaps in the learning outcomes and assessment requirements • If competence cannot be assessed, additional learning will need to be planned • The Learner needs to sign the plan to identify that they agree to it
Standardised information during CYQ training days • Assessment planning can be completed electronically i. e. Moodle, Eportfolios etc. • The assessment requirements need to be written within the LAR against the criteria that is covered. Ticking the Learning outcomes is not sufficient (in future the referencing grids will have the assessment requirements on them) • Only the minimum assessment requirements need to be covered, the remaining can be left • All assessments need to be over time on more than one occasion. One month, with the exception of Leisure Management, two months
Continued • Observation check list tick boxes are sufficient. No additional written storyboards need to accompany this tick box • The observations used for the Gym Instructors certificate or ETM cannot be used as observed evidence for the NVQ Diplomas. • Evidence generated from College Gyms could meet VARCS if clients not known to the learners are used. • All naturally occurring Product Evidence can be signposted, but needs to be VARCS in situ. This evidence has to be written on the evidence index grid with details of the date, what it is and where it can be located on site
Continued • Naturally occurring evidence should be planned for by the assessor • Avoid using CYQ programme cards, planning documents, evaluations etc. • Feedback can be given electronically via a DVR. This evidence needs to be referenced and burned onto a CD • All witnesses must be on the witness status list with their contact details. They must be credible • Planning, assessment and feedback must be clearly audited, and tailored to an individual learner. This audit trail must be available for IQA and EQA sampling. All evidence generated by the learner must be planned for and feedback given to the learner linked to VARCS
Other accredited NVQ Qualifications • Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Active Leisure, Learning and Well-Being Operational Services • Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Activity Leadership • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Leisure Management
