Cell Structures and Functions
Cell Wall Plant Cell ONLY; found outside of cell membrane; protects cell
Cell Membrane Semi-permeable barrier that allows molecules to pass through
Cilia Tiny-hair like that helps move the cell through water
Flagellum Tail-like that pulls and pushs cells through water
Nucleolus Inside nucleus where ribosomes are made Nuclear Membrane that surrounds the nucleus Nucleus Control Center (“BRAIN”) that control everything in the cell
Centriole Plays an important role in the cell division called MITOSIS
Ribosome PROTEIN FACTORY; has RNA and makes proteins. Attaches to ER or floats around in the cytoplasm
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER ) Covered with ribosomes; transports material through the cell and produces proteins in sacks Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Not covered with ribosomes; transports materials through the cell, moving newly-made proteins and lipids (fats) to Golgi Body
Golgi Body Flattened, layered sac-like (like pancakes); packages proteins it got from ER into VESICLES (ready for export like Fed. Ex)
Mitochondrion “Power House”; makes energy by converting glucose (sugar) into ATP
Cytoplasm Gel-like or Jelly-like fluid inside the cell
Chloroplast Plant ONLY; photosynthesis happens here (converting sunlight, water and carbon dioxide into energy)
Vacuole Larger storage that keeps water and other materials
Cytoskeleton Provides support and shape to the cell; holds all structures inside the cell; (Skeleton-like)
Lysosome Breaks down food or worn-out parts (helps eliminate wastes)
Vesicle Smaller storage that packages materials to be exported (around or out of the cell)
