CATALYTIC STRIPPER EMERY OIL REMOVAL EFFICIENCY M. Irwin, A. M. Boies, J. J. Swanson, H. -J. Schulz ºCatalytic Instruments
BACKGROUND ºCatalytic Instruments Gmb. H & Co. KG specialise in the production of innovative aerosol instrumentation and services founded on “catalytic stripper” (CS) technology Catalytic Stripper (CS) Common component of a Volatile Particle Remover (VPR) More robust than a simple thermodenuder/evaporation tube for the new proposed sub-23 nm roll-off Passes current challenge aerosol test (tetracontane) Next challenge: “ > 99% removal efficiency of polydisperse alkane or emery oil with count median diameter > 50 nm and mass > 1 mg/m 3” 2
VOLATILE PARTICLE REMOVER VPR A VPR is deployed to ensure only the solid fraction of aerosol is measured by the Particle Number Counter (PNC) Legislated levels are for the VPR system as a whole To ensure robustness, we tested the CS at undiluted levels Acronym PSP PTT PCF VPR PNC CS PND 2 Definition Particle Sampling Probe Particle Transfer Tube Particle pre-classifier Volatile Particle Remover Particle Number Counter Catalytic Stripper Particle Number Diluter 2
EXPERIMENTAL GOALS 01 Performance with dilution 02 Performance without dilution Examine the removal efficiency of the CS 015 under expected load conditions, i. e. with concentration appropriate to PND 1 operating at a dilution factor of at least 10 Examine the removal efficiency of the CS 015 without any dilution stages—”worst case scenario”, i. e. with no or failed PND 1
EXPERIMENTAL SETUP • • Emery oil diluted in n-propanol 1. 5 L/min flow rate through CS 015 operated at 350ºC SMPS with multiple charge correction enabled
EMERY OIL SIZE DISTRIBUTION - DILUTED
EMERY OIL CS REMOVAL EFFICIENCY Number removal efficiency = 99. 8% Mass removal efficiency = 99. 99%
EMERY OIL CS REMOVAL EFFICIENCY Number removal efficiency = 99. 8% Mass removal efficiency = 99. 99%
EMERY OIL SIZE DISTRIBUTION - UNDILUTED
EMERY OIL CS REMOVAL EFFICIENCY Number removal efficiency = 99. 4% Mass removal efficiency = 99. 99%
EMERY OIL CS REMOVAL EFFICIENCY Number removal efficiency = 99. 4% Mass removal efficiency = 99. 99%
WHAT ABOUT THIS RESIDUAL MODE? Not all particles removed? These are contaminant particles that form from metallic ionic compounds present in the mixture (n-propanol and emery oil) These compounds form small metallic nanoparticles when the solvent evaporates This can demonstrated in two ways 1) pure generation technique (no solvent) 2) a tandem CS
