GORDONVALE SS On the first day at the leadership camp, we learned a lot

GORDONVALE SS On the first day at the leadership camp, we learned a lot about getting along with others, meeting with different people and public speaking. We met retired AFL player Aaron Davies, who told us his story. He said how important it is to have goals and to follow our dreams. We did public speaking with Mr Hull who taught us public speaking strategies. On the second day at camp we did AUS identities which stated the type of person we are. We made our action plans for this year, which help us improve our school and local environment. We are looking forward to implementing these action plans and having a positive influence on our school, our community and the environment. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the camp and we are so excited to make a difference.

KURANDA SS We learnt so much about how to be a great leader. We had 2 days away from school, at Holloways Beach learning how to be a better leader. At camp we did lots of fun activities. Some of these activities were the High Ropes, AUS Identities and getting to know you. The High Ropes were cool because we got to climb up high on the ropes trying to get past difficult obstacles to get to the other side. AUS Identities were really cool because you took a test of questions and then you marked it to see what letters you got. If you got a certain combination you’d get an animal like a dolphin, a wombat, an eagle and a kangaroo. Each of these animals had different meanings. Getting to Know You was fun because we got to know all about the other kids from the other schools. All the activities we did at camp were fun. The skills we learnt were how to be a great leader and how to work as a team. How to care for the environment and how to conquer our fears. We also learnt how to be a better public speaker with Mr Hull. The leadership camp has influenced our future by helping us to build up confidence when meeting new people and speaking in public. It also taught us the qualities of being a leader and the commitment that it takes. Being on camp also influenced our future by teaching us to set goals, to put trust in each other to work as a team. REDLYNCH SS Larissa - My Favourite part of the camp were the high ropes because it was lots of fun. It was also lots of fun making new friends. Dylan - I liked meeting new friends and learning the PPP rule for public speaking. Tery - Liked meeting new friends and facing my fears at camp. Nella - I loved the high ropes course because I never got a chance to do it last year. I also liked meeting the other leaders. Alyssa – I loved all the games we played and all the fun we had with the other students. Abbey – What I enjoyed the most at HBEEC was getting to know everyone and making new friends.

WHITFIELD SS Charlie’s point of view: The first day of camp

WHITFIELD SS Charlie’s point of view: The first day of camp was a blast. First, we introduced our self to everyone for the “Getting to Know You” activities. I got to know some fantastic people who I would now consider as one of my friends. The games we played to introduce our self were entertaining and by then I knew everyone’s name. The most exciting part was finding out who was in our cabin. I was in ‘Beach Retreat. ’ Morning tea rolled around in the blink of an eye. I sat in a small group and started a conversation with all of them. After morning tea, a past AFL player gave an inspiring speech about his life and what he did to make a team. Aaron’s speech came to an end, as the high ropes course was waiting for us. One of the teachers instructed us on how to wear the harness properly. When everyone finished, we excitedly walked down to the high ropes course. It was really fun, especially coming down. Our small stomachs needed food, so we had lunch. Lunch ended so we were all instructed to enter the conference room to catch up on our booklets. We had delicious pieces of fruit. After, we all went back to our cabins to have showers and make our beds. Dinner occurred after the showers, so we went into the cafeteria. The delicious burgers were the best meal of the day by far. People were still hungry, so we had home-made ice-cream for dessert. Once again, after dessert, we were told to go into the conference room for a public speaking activity. We filled out sheets and read them out in front of all the students at the camp. After the public speaking activity, the bit we were all looking forward to was party games. The first game was a game called ‘chairs. ’ Chairs was fun since you could run around to find a seat and avoid saying a question. After the three party games, it was time for bed. We went back to our cabin and turned the lights off so we could wake up early in the morning for the beach run. Arinar’s point of view (last day of leadership camp!) - I woke up to the sound of students whispering and I realised I wasn’t in my own comfy, large bed, I was at the leadership camp! It was so early we had to stay up until John came to tell us to wake up. Our cabin, Richtors Resort had already started getting ready. But sadly this day was the last day of camp. I was glad I made so many friends. I organised my life and we all went to see the beautiful sunrise by the blue ocean. I was part of the morning cooks’ team so I only saw the sunrise for a short time. What we had for breakfast was toad in the hole (egg in toast), cereal, buttered toasted bread and some raisin bread. Yummy! I hope you guys have fun teaching the next student leaders of 2019! Tiarna’s Point of View: We were finally working on our action plan for 2018 and we had developed all the skills we needed to use for the year ahead. I was very excited to be coming home, but I was going to miss all the new friends I had made, even though we would be seeing each other at the end of the year. Throughout the entire two days we had been there, my favourite activity was “Getting to Know You”. I had met everyone and they were all from different schools, so it was pretty scary. Then everyone got together in their cabins. I was in “Fish Tank” cabin with Terry our supervisor for the night. All in all I had an amazing time at camp and I would not change one thing about it. We hope that you have enjoyed us coming to this camp just like the past Student Leaders. Mia’s feelings before she got to camp! It was the morning of camp… I was that excited that I woke up 3 hours before I was meant to. I was really eager so I told my mum that we had to leave the house at 6: 45 am even though we didn’t need to be at camp until 8: 00. On the way to Holloways I began to get really nervous, I was that nervous I even asked my mum if I got home sick would she come and get me. Then I started to think to myself “I’m going to meet new friends… are they going to think that I have the qualities of a leader? ” As we pulled up outside of camp, Arinar and Tiarna got there at the same time as me. We were all very nervous so we all decided to walk in together. It was very nerve-wracking but I felt much better with my fellow student leaders beside me. When we walked into the camp’s under covered area, it felt weird because all of the schools were only sitting with their own school, no one was jumbled up but I was sure that It would be very different by the end of camp and that I would have 23 new friends at the Holloways Beach Environmental Education Centre.

YORKEYS KNOB SS We learnt a lot of great skills while on Leaders

YORKEYS KNOB SS We learnt a lot of great skills while on Leaders Camp at HBEEC. One of the most challenging activities was the public speaking. We had to speak in front of an audience, and this took courage. One of the highlights of the camp was the teamwork challenges such as the rope swing challenge. I learnt that communication is very important while working in teams. The Leaders Camp has helped my leadership skills and I hope to see some of the other leaders in the future. Brodie The leadership camp was BEYOND AWESOME!!! It taught me new skills like public speaking and team work, as well as courage. One of the things I enjoyed the most was the food! The burgers were amazing and so were the sandwiches. To conclude, the camp was something I will never forget. Zion Some of my favourite activities at the HBEEC Leadership Camp was the team building exercises, the beach walk and the high ropes course. I made so many new friends with the team building activities and the beach walk was magnificent. The high ropes course was fun and slightly scary but I got out of my comfort zone and went higher on the ropes course. The camp staff gave us so many good ideas to how to improve and be a better leader. Similarly, I really enjoyed the camp and learned so many new skills. Thank you, HBEEC. Siena HBEEC camp helped me to realise how to work as a team with new people that I hadn’t met before. It also helped me to improve my skills on public speaking, in front of audiences. My favourite activity at the leadership camp was when the breakfast cooking group had their turn, in the morning. I was in that group, and for breakfast, we had a wild selection of delectable foods. I also enjoyed when we did high ropes, because we had just done it about a week ago, which was making it easy and more exiting. All throughout the educating camp, I was eventually forced out of my comfort zone, but I got used to it pretty quickly. Overall, I highly enjoyed the leadership camp, because it taught me a lot about teamwork and how to overcome big challenges. I’d love to go there any time again. Katie
