Context and Specific Development challenge(s) Our Centre will be Addressing • Decline in fish production coupled with high post-harvest losses (MW: 40%, Zambia and Uganda : 30%) • Rapid population growth: • Result in low per capita consumption [MW (5. 6), Zambia (7. 2), Uganda (10), Mozambique (10. 2) whilst SSA (8. 4) Vs. 15 Kg recommended by FAO] • Yet, fish is important: Nutrition (70% of animal protein), Economics 3 Lilongwe University Of Agriculture And Natural Resources (LUANAR)

Main Objective To foster innovation and entrepreneurship in the production of high skilled fit-for-purpose critical mass of agricultural scientists for improved aquaculture and fisheries management in order to enhance food, nutrition and economic security in Eastern and Southern Africa. 5 Lilongwe University Of Agriculture And Natural Resources (LUANAR)

Specific Objectives 1. To train critical mass of MSc and Ph. D graduates who are competent to create innovations that will revolutionize the aquaculture and fisheries sector in Africa. 2. To enhance capacity of the center to attract national and regional students and train world class scientists that are relevant to industrial and development needs in the aquaculture and fisheries sector in Africa. 3. Improve innovations/technologies for increasing fish production, value addition and marketing, through partnerships with the private sector, academic and research institutions, and civil society organizations. 4. To develop entrepreneurial short courses and innovation packages that will attract funds to sustain the center of excellence and its partnership platforms. Ø The Performance and Funding Agreement was signed between Ministry of Finance and Aqua. Fish on 10 th November, 2016. ØDate of Effectiveness was declared on 6 th December, 2016 for Aqua. Fish.
