Who needs a 4 th year of study in psychology? Consider your career goals, strengths, weaknesses, values

A 4 th year qualification in psychology may not be necessary if you… • Want to be in a “helping” profession – E. g. , Counsellor, Case Worker at Dept of Family Services, Social work, Occupational Therapist, Speech Language Pathologist, Medical Practitioner, … etc. • Want a career in another area that values your foundational learning in psychology – E. g. , marketing, human resources, government graduate positions, graduate internships in corporations 3

Eligibility for Honours Pre-COVID 19 • To be eligible to apply for entry into Course 353 in 2021, make sure you have met all the following requirements: – completed all credit point requirements for a degree with a major in Psychology; – completed • PSYC 324 (Assessment and Intervention) • PSYC 325 (History and philosophy) • PSYC 326 (Design and analysis) • PSYC 251 (Abnormal Psych) – at least a good credit average for Psychology subjects at 200 - and 300 levels; – completed at least 76 credit points of Psychology subjects at 200 - and 300 - levels; 9 Document title

2020 BPsyc. Sc (Hons) internal applications: Pre-COVID 19 • Your completed 200 - and 300 -level psychology subjects are used to calculate a weighted average mark (i. e. , by credit point weighting) – PSYC 354/PSYC 326 (3 rd year Metatheory), – PSYC 348/PSYC 325 (3 rd year stats), and – Your “best” subject marks in nine (9) other 200 - and 300 -level psychology subjects • More than one attempt in a subject? – Higher mark will be counted – Accommodation for setbacks (ill health and other unforeseen personal circumstances) 10

Satisfactory (S) grades • • 11 In response to COVID 19 students been given the option of taking S grades Reflecting potential for poorer performance – Due to disruption to traditional educational practices – Stress and anxiety caused by the pandemic Document title

Contribution to the WAM • • 12 Given an S grade is not numerical, it cannot be used to calculate your WAM. Hence, you may not have eleven (11) subjects with numerical marks. Document title

Eligibility for Honours Post-COVID 19 • • For third year students applying for honours in 2121 Your completed 200 - and 300 -level psychology subjects are still used to calculate a weighted average mark (i. e. , by credit point weighting) – PSYC 354/PSYC 326 (3 rd year Metatheory), – PSYC 348/PSYC 325 (3 rd year stats), and – New WAM calculation for 2021 Honours entry: • Your “best” subject marks in six (6) other 200 - and 300 -level psychology subjects This means 8 sets of 200/300 level psychology marks are used to calculate your WAM (instead of 11) 13 Document title

Why discuss this now? • For third years while you may meet the minimum number of subjects with – PSYC 354/PSYC 326 (3 rd year Metatheory), – PSYC 348/PSYC 325 (3 rd year stats), and – The six (6) 200 -level psychology subjects. • 17 But, you better be really happy with all your second year marks Document title

Second year students • • • 18 What about students in second year? If a student takes a significant number of S grades now You may need to include more third year subjects to their WAM to reach the minimum number of subjects needed Document title

Take home message • • • 19 S grades can take the pressure off – We do realise there is a good deal of stress at the moment. – We do realise this can effect your performance. But it is important to continue to allocate as much time as you can to all your subjects. If you are interested on applying for the honours programme – The more marks you can declare the greater flexibility you will have Document title
