Death in the Long Grass The sound of Nadia Vole pounding on the door

Death in the Long Grass The sound of Nadia Vole pounding on the door wakes Alex up the next morning. This will be his last session with the Stormbreaker because the computers are being shipped out that afternoon; she suggests that he take a walk to Port Tallon after he's finished for the day Alex finds a message on his Game Boy from MI 6—they can't interpret the map either. Stormbreaker isn't as fun the second time around. When he's finished, Alex takes Mrs. Vole up on the stroll to Port Tallon. Alex follows footpath signs leading to Port Tallon. Something about the second sign makes him think twice, but he trudges on nonetheless until, to his surprise, he ends up in the middle of a grassy field. Suddenly, there's the roar of engines and Alex sees two "quad bikes" raging towards him with clearly murderous intent. (with flamethrowers) Alex manages to knock one of the drivers off and quickly takes his bike. Then he plays chicken with the other rider and wins, sending the one off a cliff. Exhausted, Alex walks down to Port Tallon to regain his composure.

Dozmary Mine Alex ends up at the library because he remembers Sayle mentioning that Ian "spent half of his time" (11. 5) there. He asks the librarian about Ian. The man remembers Ian researching viruses a lot, and Alex assumes that he means computer viruses. The librarian also mentions that Ian spent a lot of time in section CL. Something clicks in Alex's head and he realizes that he saw the letters CL on Ian's map—Ian wrote down library reference numbers Alex finds a book about the local Dozmary mine, which contains an old black-and-white map that fits the one that Ian had made. The puzzle pieces are falling together. A photocopy of the map in hand, Alex heads to the entrance of the mine. Time is running out. He finds a trapdoor leading into the mine and slowly climbs down the ladder; he reaches the bottom of the dark shaft and tries to "fight off the sense of claustrophobia" Alex follows Ian's map into the depths of the mine. As he gets deeper, the passageways become increasingly cramped and Alex can feel water at his feet. It looks like he's reached a dead end until Alex realizes he's standing in front of a pool of water. Luckily, Ian left a dry wetsuit and a track of rope behind, presumably for his return voyage. Alex suits up and dives in; the water is freezing and he can barely see a thing. Finally, he feels "his shoulder come clear and he knew that he made it.

Behind the Door The room is completely dark, but Alex can see a light at the end of the tunnel. There's a loud buzzing coming from the lit area, so he reaches an open air conditioner grill and climbs inside. Alex emerges in an all-white, sterile laboratory. He sees one of the metal boxes and opens it, but its empty interior proves that whatever had been delivered was already in use A voice comes on the intercom announcing that it's 7: 00 PM—decontamination time. Alex can see workers loading test tubes into the Stormbreakers and finally realizes that his uncle wasn't worried about computer viruses—he was worried about biological warfare. Suddenly, Alex feels gun at his back. The guard hesitates, so Alex launches a Chuck Norris-style kick into his gut and hustles away. Alex wants to get back to his room so he can use the Game Boy to contact MI 6, but his path is blocked by three more guards. Alex high-tails it out of there and realises that he's standing on the other end of the locked door in the basement. The guards follow him into the room, but they don't see him. One guard unlocks the door and goes through, and Alex slips through before it closes. Now that he's back in a familiar area, Alex doesn't have too much trouble making it outside. He sees men loading Stormbreakers into cargo planes—there's no doubt that this is "the end of the assembly line. Finally, he makes it back into his room and grabs his stuff. The only problem is that Mr. Grin is outside waiting and promptly gets him in the jaw.

Dusk. Tim walked through the wood. He was enjoying his walk. He could see the tall trees and smell the beautiful bluebells. Suddenly it started to get dark. Tim was very scared. It was very quiet then he heard a noise. He saw a monster. Tim started to run.

Dusk. Tim sauntered through the woods, whistling his favourite tune. Beneath the towering trees, the beautiful bluebells stretched out before him like a carpet and he breathed in their heavenly perfume. Suddenly, the light started to fade and a cold chill filled the air. Tim shivered. He stopped in his tracks and listened carefully. Silence. Then, behind him he heard a twig snap and, out of the corner of his eye, he saw a dark shadow in the dense undergrowth. What was that? A cold finger of fear ran down Tim’s spine as he realised he was no longer alone…
