SPELLING STRATEGIES Rainbow words Backwards Words Higher & Lower Caps Pyramid Words without vowels Write out the word using coloured pencils to help make parts of the word memorable. Then trace over each letter in rainbow colours! Write each of your spelling words out backwards! Look carefully at each letter. Write the word out using alternative capital letters and lower case. Make a pyramid by adding a letter of your word on each line. Write the words without the vowels. Then go back and put the vowels in using a different colour Drawing images Silly sentences Quickwrite Hidden Words Story, Story This is all about making a word memorable. Draw images around your word to make the meaning of the word memorable. Write a silly sentence for each of your words. Underline your spelling word in the sentence. Writing words with speed and fluency. Write as many words as possible within a time constraint or write the same word as many times as possible within the given time. Draw and colour a picture. Hide your spelling words inside the picture. Write a story using ALL of your spelling words. Be sure to underline your spelling words in the paragraph. Finally, write each word in felt tips! Write your spelling words in alphabetical order. If any start with the same letter, look at the next letter. Write the word out making sure it is large enough to trace over. Trace over the word and say it at the same time. Then turn over the page and write the word as you say it, then check you’ve spelt it correctly. Write each of your spelling words with a rhyming word next to them. This method forces you to look carefully at each letter.
