Partnership This year is a partnership. Your child, you and me. Your child will need to do their bit • a positive can do attitude; • always giving 100%; • pushing themselves and taking on a challenge; • asking for help, • complete homework • actively look at how they can improve in things, especially in things they know they struggle with.

Planning for our Curriculum was linked to our School Aim –‘Help our teachers to light the spark for a love of learning and of life. ’ We use the acronym SPARK to remind us about how we learn. We think of the brain as a muscle and intelligence as something that grows with exercise, we ask our children to have ‘lively’ brains not ‘lazy’ brains. We want our children to lead and take responsibility for their own Learning Journey. Children need to recognise that no-one can make that journey for them. For children to become active learners they cannot just be trained; put simply its about the right learning attitude- it is having the WILL to pursue the SKILL. Learning is ‘how we call a skill to mind and make use of it’. Learning is when ‘we activate our learning capacity’.

Spirituality is learning through the senses and your spirit. YOU feel a sense of awe and wonder (WOW), feeling a sense of the way you connect to the wide universe. Practical or ‘hands on’ learning- helps YOU to learn by ‘doing’ and ‘talking, so you build your understanding through experiences and remember them. Asking Questions is a way of learning. – It is good to ask ‘why, what, when and how’; ‘What do I want to know about? ’, ‘How will I use this learning in my life? ’ Use YOUR curiosity and interests and think for YOURSELF.

Resilience means that YOU don’t give up – to FAIL is a ‘First Attempt

Resilience means that YOU don’t give up – to FAIL is a ‘First Attempt in Learning’. You are learning all the time and you won’t always get it right first time. Learn to enjoy a challenge, stretch your brain and give it a good work-out! Are you leading your own learning? Knowledge is everything YOU have learned. ‘What do YOU know that YOU did not know at the start of the lesson? ’ How are YOU going to use your knowledge? Can YOU talk about what you know and how you use it to learn more. We are all life-long learners.

Reading at home Please encourage your child to read regularly at home. We want the children to have an enjoyment of reading. Please encourage them to talk about what they are reading and what you are reading too. Please record in the reading diary when you have read with your child. Handy tips Before reading, ask your child to have a quick glance at the story, looking at characters, pictures, settings and predicting what is happening in the story. Discuss any tricky or unusual words or new experiences (what knowledge does your child bring to this story? ). Your child is in charge of the reading and should hold the book, letting them use their finger to point to words. Ask lots of questions and let them ask you questions about the story at the end of the reading. Try not to correct your child when they have made an error, ask at the end of the sentence “does that make sense? ”

Rewards and Sanctions In Year 1, we have a ‘star’ and the names of the children will be written on the star when they have done something positive, good learner, good friend etc. Yellow cards are used as a warning that a child’s behaviour is interrupting the learning environment or spoiling play times. A red card will be given if no improvement is seen, your child will then fill in a behaviour sheet which will be sent home. The school’s behaviour code is set out on the home-school agreement.

End of School day Ø Ø Year 1 leave school via the double white doors onto the playground. A member of staff will be on the door and a child will only be sent out once the teacher has seen the parent/grandparent. Parents and carers should wait on the playground to collect children. It is important we know if there any changes to your child’s home time arrangements. Please let the office know if someone else is picking up your child, even if it is a friend.
