Accelerated Reader is an important part of your child’s reading progress. Your child should be reading every night including weekends a minimum of 30 -45 minutes. Students have a reading range assigned to them. This range will change throughout the year. They are expected to know what their reading range is at all times so they can choose appropriate books. When they finish each book, they will take an AR computer quiz in class and try to score at least an 80% average. Every book they take a quiz on will earn them points. Each nine week grading period they receive a grade based on the points they earned in AR. I will use the following rubric: A = 20 or more points B = 16 -19. 9 C = 14 -15. 9 D = 10 -13. 9 F = 9. 9 or below Students should have a book to read at ALL times! They may even bring their Kindle or reading tablet to class if they prefer.

Home Learning As a faculty and school, we have been looking at the effectiveness

Home Learning As a faculty and school, we have been looking at the effectiveness of home learning. Your children will still have home learning, but it will be based on things they need to know for their test. SPELLING: Students have a spelling list of 20 words each week that they will be tested on at the end of that week. Students can choose to study any way they need. Each student learns differently, and they can practice whichever way they learn best. GRAMMAR: Grammar is taught at the beginning of the week and they self-check their work every day. Most days, time is given in class to work on their grammar. If they do not use their time effectively, they may need to complete it at home. This will be a review of the day’s lesson to practice at home. They should not need help with homework as it will be a review of what was taught in class. If they do not understand something, make sure it is communicated to me so that I know what skills they need help with. READING: Students are expected to read every day including weekends (at least 30 -45 minutes per day). Students will have about 2 book reports due per nine week grading period on both fiction and non-fiction books. They will be given ample time to choose their book and complete the book report. They will learn how to effectively complete their book report and are expected to do it on their own. Time is given in class to complete the book report. If they do not use their time effectively, they may need to complete it at home.
