Meet the Principals Assistant Principal Dino Katsiris Principal Christie Winkelmann
Meet the Teacher Experience in Pre-Kindergarten, Second, and First Grade. §Starting my 17 th year at Brisas. §Taught ten years before that in private schools §Attended University of Colorado, Boulder and then graduated from Arizona State. §I am a “Highly Qualified” teacher as per the state requirements §I am a native of Arizona. §I am married with 4 children and a grandson § 2 graduated college, 1 @ ASU nursing, 1 Sr Corona
Read-a-thon Fundraiser 2013 Our goal is to fundraise AND increase the love for reading in students. • Reading starts on Wednesday, September 3 rd and continues through Friday, September 12 th • Includes daily treats, exciting prizes, gradelevel raffles and fun events! • Prizes for ALL students who participate.
Read-a-thon Fundraiser 2013 Our goal is to fundraise AND increase the love for reading in students. • No minimum $ amount required to participate. • 100% of all money collected goes directly to help Brisas. • Only planned fundraiser. • Goal is to raise $30, 000 to fund school programs. • Information will go home the week of August 25 th
School/Classroom Rules • Rules are consistent throughout the school and classroom: • Be Respectful. • Be Responsible. • Be Safe. These follow a PBIS model where ALL teachers and staff adhere to the same rules.
Daily Procedures • Daily attendance is important! • Learning starts at 7: 40 AM • If you are late, take your child to the office to get a late pass • If your child will be absent, call the attendance line 480541 -2001 • If you are changing your going home plan, you need to notify the teacher in writing. • E-mail may not be the best option, as we don’t always have time to check our messages throughout the day. • If there is a change of who is picking up your child, notify the teacher in writing
Reading This year in reading we will learn: • • • Balanced Approach/Harcourt Phonemic Awareness and Phonics 39 sight words, (in the K - handbook) Large Group: Big Books, Poems, Songs Small Group Instruction Individualized Reading at varied levels • DIBELS testing/support groups
Math This year in math we will learn: • Count objects to tell how many there are • Comparing two groups of objects to tell which group, if either, has more; comparing two written numbers to tell which is greater • Acting out addition and subtraction word problems and drawing diagrams to represent them • Adding with a sum of 10 or less; subtracting from a number 10 or less; and solving addition and subtraction word problems • Adding and subtracting very small numbers quickly and accurately (ex: 3+1) • Correctly naming shapes regardless of orientation or size (ex: square oriented as a diamond is still a square)
Writing This year in writing we will learn: • • • D’Nealian Handwriting Workshop Journal Writing Inventive Spelling Writing Rubric
Science/Social Studies This year we will learn about: • • Plants/Insects Animals Habitats and Life cycles Earth/Space Five Senses/Healthy Habits Seasons/Weather United States/Holidays Community
Daily Schedule Each classroom varies but includes the following: • • • Language Arts Recess/Lunch Math Writing Science/Social Studies/Health Special Classes
Special Classes Students will visit five special classes each week taught by special area teachers. PE- Tuesday Art- Friday Music- Wednesday Computer Lab- Thursday **need volunteer? Library- Monday, no book- no new book * On P. E. days please make sure your child wears tennis shoes and dresses appropriately. If they do not dress appropriately they will have to sit out of P. E.
Field Trips • Permission Slips • Desert Breeze Park (Trees/Leaves, Fire/Police stations, Train, Water Day, Picnics, Public library) 2 day notice • Bus field trips (Fall- Farm, Spring- Zoo) • Field Trip Volunteers • Tax Credit donations
Learning Field Trips
Grading • Progress Reports-2 x a year in January & May • A mini progress report is sent home in March • Conferences *Parent-Student-Teacher Conference in October *Group Portfolio Conference in March
Parent Involvement • Support your child’s good study habits • Join our school’s PTSO or Site Council • Volunteer in the classroom, chaperone a field trip, assist with a special project or at a special event, attend parent trainings, etc. • Room Parent, (emailing: sign up genius, volunteers classroom parties, volunteers spring carnival) • Jr. Achievement, (5 lessons, scripted…EASY) • Art Masterpiece (binder with ideas, supplies provided… 4 or 5 lessons) • … WE NEED YOU!! • Come to school activities and special events • Give your input, ideas and suggestions
Homework • Homework packets will be sent home electronically each week. • Parents please PRINT and send completed packets back to school with your child. Homework • Daily: Unfinished classwork (yellow folder), return NEXT day • Nightly reading 10 -15 min • Weekly: *Packet, online Parent vue (print, complete, return ) *Paper decodable (phonics based) with homework Practice and KEEP home *Small theme paper books (baggies) triangle read please sign each time you read and return homework • Monthly: Monthly reading log, 25 books/month goal EVERYTHING counts, nightly reading, library books decodables, theme…anything you READ! PRIZES
