Welcome to Visualizing Efficiency in Power BI angel@designmind. com Design. Mind. com/blog Angel Abundez VP Solutions Architecture @angelstreamline
Session Objective • Learn how to tell data stories… • Through a combination of Dashboards and Reports • Invite users to explore • Extend Power BI with R-visuals • Curate an environment with Power BI Embedded
Session Agenda • Dashboards and Reports work together • Stay Accountable with Targets / Reference Lines • Learn what’s possible with R • See what’s possible with Power BI Embedded
Dashboard content is pinned from Reports https: //powerbi. microsoft. com/en-us/documentation/powerbi-service-pin-a-tile-to-a-dashboard-from-a-report/
Things to Know before getting started with Dashboards • Dashboard Tile is a saved visual with the fields and filters applied at the time of pinning. • If base visual is changed, you must replace with new pin • If base visual’s field’s are changed, you must replace with new pin • If base visual needs different filters applied, you must replace with new pin • Mobile View experience is superior to Report Mobile View
Dashboards Do’s and Don’ts • Do • Align common elements from left to right • Rename Titles and Subtitles to tell your story • Apply Custom Links to your tiles to simulate drill-through functionality • Use URL Parameters: https: //powerbi. microsoft. com/en-us/blog/filter-a-report-with-aurl-query-string-parameter/ • Pay attention to Mobile View • Do Not • Leave default names • Rely solely on Reports
Reports Do’s and Don’ts • Do • Add Tables and Matrices for more detail information • If a report page can stand well enough on its own, pin the whole page to the Dashboard. • Format Titles consistently • Make suggestions on how users can explore • Do Not • Duplicate report pages. Pin tiles on the Dashboard instead.
Visual Targets • You can add targets in the following ways: 1. Combo Chart 2. Bullet Chart 1. https: //okviz. com/bullet-chart/ 3. Gauges
Dynamic Reference lines • Learn about their limitations: https: //powerbi. microsoft. com/enus/documentation/powerbi-desktopanalytics-pane/#limitations • Where’s my trend line? http: //www. sqlservercentral. com/blogs/ko en-verbeeck/2017/06/13/wheres-the-trend -line-in-power-bi-desktop/ • Forecast Line error: http: //www. erikhudzik. com/2017/01/16/p ower-bi-forecasting-feature-and-when-your -data-is-too-irregular-to-forecast/
Before you begin, Install R • https: //www. r-project. org/ • Install RStudio • https: //www. rstudio. com/products/rstudio/
Create your first R-Visual • Use sample R dataset volcano persp(volcano, expand=0. 2)
Power BI Embedded • Eliminate “swivel-chair” integration of application and reporting • Develop compelling, interactive visuals quicker than coding visual control libraries in an app • Embed Power BI reports within IFRAME HTML tags; open reports with correct context for your users, as well as change that context after report is loaded • Dynamic bi-directional communication of Power BI reports from your application using Power BI Java. Script API • • • Get/set report filters Dynamically embed Power BI reports in code Swap datasets Navigate report pages Capture report click-events Respond to user selecting data
Contextual Analysis Power BI Embedded Power BI Java. Script Application Logic • Power BI Embedded Subscription to Microsoft Azure is required for you to publish Power BI reports to your application. • Power BI Java. Script API Provides rich interactions between application and reports to show the right data at the right time. Available at: https: //microsoft. github. io/Power. BI-Java. Script • Application Logic This is where the tie-ins between application and report take place.
