Sight Words Activities to Practice Sight Words, Letters and Sounds Flashcard Put sight words on flash cards and practice them in isolation. -You can show cards to student and have him/her read them, spell them, and then read them again (read-spell-read). -You can read one card at a time to the student and have him/her write them on a white board or paper. -Have student select 5 cards a day and write those words in sentences. -Have students arrange sight word cards to form sentences. Record sentences on a piece of paper. Word Builder Make new words from the words on the sight word list by changing the first letter or blend (practicing rhyming words) example: last->fast Memory Select 20 words from the word list. Put each word on 2 flash cards. Place the words facing down. Each player turns two cards over and reads them. If the cards match, the player keeps them and goes again. If they do not match the player turns them back over. The player with the most pairs wins.

Give the players clues and see if they can guess what word you are thinking of. For example, for the word “enough” I might say “It has 2 syllables, it ends with the /f/ sound. ” For the word “that” I might say “It rhymes with ‘cat’ and begins with the /th/ sound. Magnetic Letters Using magnetic letters and a cookie sheet, have student form sight words. You can also use the magnetic letters to do the word scramble activity. Word Scramble Write a word on a piece of paper. Cut the letters apart and scramble them. Have student unscramble the word and glue it down or write in on a piece of paper. Shaving Cream Put down a small amount of shaving cream and write letters inside of it. Read While reading stories with your child, have them identify sight words they notice. Play Dough Use play dough to form letters or sight words.

Activities to Practice Sight Words, Letters and Sounds (Continued) Sight Words Letter Sort Using magnetic letters, identify letter names and sounds, and match upper- and lower-case letters. Cover Letters Write letters very large on a piece of paper. Cover letter with glue and glue down buttons, cheerios, noodles, cotton balls, etc. Easter Eggs Write sight words on paper and cut apart. Place 1, 2 or 3 words in each plastic egg. Have students select egg and read the words inside of the egg. Players get one point for each word they read correctly. Zap Write sight words on popsicle sticks. Write the word “ZAP” on a few sticks. Place all sticks in a cup. Have players take turns drawing sticks and reading words. If they read it correctly, they keep the stick. If they get a “ZAP” they must put all their sticks back in the cup. This game can also be down with letter names and sounds. What’s the Sound Show the student a picture or object and ask them to name it. Then have the student tell you the beginning sound or ending sound. Math Word Problems Please complete these two math word problems this week. When answering the problems students should show their thinking by showing their work with pictures, include an equation when appropriate, and finally, students should include a labeled answer to the question. Example: If you 1 flower and someone gives you 2 more flowers, how many flowers do you have? (picture) * + ** (equation) 1 + 2 = 3 answer: (labeled answer) 3 flowers. Problem 1 can be done on Monday or Tuesday, and problem 2 can be done on Wednesday or Thursday. Students should read the problem three (3) times before answering it.
