Critical Thinking We learnt how powerful and important a headline is. Publishers will exaggerate and use emotive language to make the headline as eye catching as possible, which can lead to readers getting different information or ideas. We also learnt ways in which the media can spin a story and how to spot this, for example: Ø Is there a link to the research at hand? Ø Are there original quotes from the scientists involved or have they been paraphrased? Ø Is there any data or statistics? Ø Read the whole article, don’t just glance at the headline

Genetically Modified Crops We learnt many interesting facts about genetically modified crops and their impact in the food industry. Some advantages include: faster growth, increased food supply and disease resistant plants. This is important for the growing population. As well as this we developed our research skills by researching the GM crop BT cotton:

Bio. Render We learnt how to use Bio. Render software to illustrate our ideas.

University Insight and Personal Statement As a result of the multiple Q and A

University Insight and Personal Statement As a result of the multiple Q and A sessions, we learnt about some of the courses available at the University of Dundee, as well as career journeys from multiple students and lecturers. We also gained an insight into what some of the researchers’ jobs entail on a day to day basis, for example in plant sciences. Lastly we learnt the structure of a personal statement and ideas of what to include in it. Overall the work experience week widened our knowledge of the courses and career pathways available and that you shouldn’t be set on one pathway because other opportunities might present themselves.
