What is the LEARN Model? • Developed by Dr. Carolyn Speer and John Jones.

What is the LEARN Model? • Developed by Dr. Carolyn Speer and John Jones. – The word “learn” isn’t measurable – “Today’s assessment paradigm can take the verb learn from our outcomes, but it can’t take it from our classes. Higher education is constructed on the love of learning. Learning is our foundation. Helping people learn how to learn is our job. ” • LEARN: Listen, Envision, Adjust, Revise, and Negotiate • The Green Light Principle 8

Listen: Leigh Jackson “I kind of pride myself on helping students that think they “hate history” by reframing the picture so they find that history exists in their lives. I try to help them experience history as I did in college through debate and questioning narratives. Ideally, they learn not only about history, but also about the pursuit of knowledge. ” 9

Student Review “Honestly, I didn’t give students enough credit. Today’s students are very tech savvy and know what they are doing. I was so worried they were going to be bombarding me with tech questions I would not be able to answer, and that really hasn’t happened. They also aren’t afraid to straight up ask you things that in a face-to-face classroom they might not. It’s a liberating thing, but sometimes I’m like, wow! I’m getting old! ” 20

Leigh’s Experience What is your favorite part of online instruction? The ease of communication!

Leigh’s Experience What is your favorite part of online instruction? The ease of communication! Today’s traditional and non-traditional students think nothing of communicating entirely online. It’s on their terms. It’s so easy! Email and Blackboard are right on my phone, so I can “teach” from just about any place. They can dictate how much interaction they want to have with me, but I know they are getting everything they need to because I am constantly reading their posts and grading their assignments. It’s easy to track exactly where every student is within the course at any given time. What is your least favorite and how do you overcome that challenge? Asynchronous teaching takes some getting used to. I miss telling funny stories to drive a point home and seeing students smile involuntarily because they can relate. For a people person like me, I do occasionally feel very disassociated as an instructor, but I just try to read more posts, engage more students, and keep going. 21
