Famous German Fashion Designers Two of the most famous German fashion designers are Karl Lagerfeld and Hugo Boss. Karl Otto Lagerfeld was a German creative director, fashion designer, artist, photographer and caricaturist. He started his career in fashion design in 1955, when he entered a coat design competition. He went on to win and became friendly with Yves Saint Laurent, who won the dress category. Soon after he was hired to work as Pierre Balmai’s assistant. In 1961, he decided to work as a freelancer, but it wasn’t long before he was designing collections for Chloe, Fendi, Valentino, Chanel and more. His career lasted 70 years and he continued to work up until his death on 19 th February 2019. He was 85 years old.
