Major Focus: Manipulative Skills Sub Focus: Throwing and Catching
Objectives • NASPE Standard 1: • All students will be able to catch a balloon with both hands • All students will understand what personal space is • All students will be able to follow simple verbal directions and visual directions when asked to catch or bat at the balloon using different body parts, (Ex: hands, elbows, head, and knees. )
Objectives: • NASPE Standard 2: • All students will experiment with force when hitting, or tossing balloons. • All students will practice throwing skills with balloons by themselves, in pairs and in small group.
Objectives: NASPE Standard 5 • All students will participate with partners and in small groups • All students will respect others space and materials • All students will work together to keep balloon in the air.
Introduction: • Read Book Altoona Baboona by: Janie Bynum • Questions Discussed: • Where did Baboona go? • What can we do with a balloon? • Can you hit the balloon with your head… ect? • Student Demonstration
Materials Needed: • Book • Balloons (enough for each child and some extra just in case) • Star and circle mats • Music
Organization/Management: • Demonstrate skills of catching and throwing • Brief debriefing of game and rules on using balloons • Practice start and stop with music (children should freeze and set balloon down in front of them when music stops). • Individual work • Partner work • Lesson will end with a whole group activity • Music will provide start and stop cues
Task Development: Task: • Toss the balloon in the air and catch it.
Task Development Challenge: • Let the balloon bounce off their head then catch.
Task Development: Task: • Hit the balloon back and forth to your partner Challenge: • Count how many times you can throw the balloon to your partner in 30 seconds
Task Development: Task: • Hit the balloon with your elbow Challenge: • Try to stay in your spot while hitting the balloon with your elbow.
Task Development: Task: • Toss the balloon to a friend in small group Challenge: • Count how many times we toss the balloon to each other in 30 seconds.
Closure: • Children will gather in circle and toss a balloon to each other for 30 seconds. • Students will count to see how many times we pass it to one another before we hit 30 seconds. • Children will sit in circle and discuss activity with instructor.
Reflection: • A bigger space to use balloons. The classroom was too small of a space and we can not use the multipurpose room. (Indoors activity to avoid balloon from popping). • Review expectations and rules more. • Give children more opportunity to practice freeze and go commands. • Work on leaving stars and circle mats on the floor
