The Cleansing of the Sanctuary AS

The Sanctuary • And he said unto me, Unto two thousand three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed. (Dan 8: 14) • The 2, 300 days = 2, 300 years period that ended in 1844. • To understand ‘the cleansing of the Sanctuary’ we need to study the sanctuary services in the Old Testament.

The Sanctuary • And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. (Exo 25: 8) • And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God. (Exo 29: 45) • And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. (2 Co 6: 16) • God dwells among them that He may dwell in them.

The Sanctuary • Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God? (Psa 77: 13) • Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (Joh 14: 6) • The voice of the LORD maketh the hinds to calve, and discovereth the forests: and in his temple doth every one speak (Margin KJB: every whit of it speak) of his glory. (Psa 29: 9) • The Old Testament sanctuary was designed as a teaching aid for the gospel (the Ministry of Jesus).

The Sanctuary • Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer. For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. (Heb 8: 1 -5)

The Sanctuary – The Daily • And to the office of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest pertaineth the oil for the light, and the sweet incense, and the daily meat offering, and the anointing oil, and the oversight of all the tabernacle, and of all that therein is, in the sanctuary, and in the vessels thereof. (Num 4: 16) • After this manner ye shall offer daily, throughout the seven days, the meat of the sacrifice made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD: it shall be offered beside the continual burnt offering, and his drink offering. (Num 28: 24)

The Sanctuary – The Daily • The Daily Ministry included the sacrificial offering morning and evening, the confession of sinners, etc. All services were performed in the courtyard and the Holy Place. • Once a year on the Day of Atonement the High Priest on behalf of the people would enter the Most Holy Place.

The Sanctuary – The Day of Atonement • Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD. And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the LORD your God. For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people. And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people. Ye shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. (Lev 23: 27 -31)

Holy Convocation • Strong’s H 4744; ; מקרא miqra ’; mik-raw’; From H 7121; something called out, that is, a public meeting (the act, the persons, or the place); also a rehearsal: - assembly, calling, convocation, reading. • Strong’s G 1577; ε κκλησι α; ekkle sia; ek-klay-see’-ah; From a compound of G 1537 and a derivative of G 2564; a calling out, that is, (concretely) a popular meeting, especially a religious congregation (Jewish synagogue, or Christian community of members on earth or saints in heaven or both): - assembly, church. • The assembly or church is a gathering together for a Holy Purpose. • Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God. (Lev 20: 7)

Afflict Your Souls • Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance. (Ezr 8: 21) • The purpose of the gathering is to know the will of God that it be done in your life. • Fasting and all other activities are done to promote the achievement of this purpose.

Offering made by Fire • Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness. (Mal 3: 1 -3) • Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction. (Isa 48: 10)

Offering made by Fire • I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man the golden wedge of Ophir. (Isa 13: 12) • As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise. (Pro 27: 21) • The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts. (Pro 17: 3) Judge

Do no Work • Avoid distraction and focus on the worship service. • Anyone not present was to cut off – judged unworthy and disowned.

Service on the Day of Atonement • And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness. (Lev 16: 16)

The bullock and goat sin offering was sacrificed and the blood taken into the Most Holy by the High Priest and sprinkled on the mercy seat (top of the ark of the Covenant). 5. The High Priest then in the courtyard confessed the sins of the people on the head of the live goat. 6. The got was then led into the wilderness by a fit man and released. 7. The skin, flesh and dung of the sin offerings were burnt outside of the camp.

Gilbert in his book; “The Messiah in His Sanctuary” quotes from the Jewish encyclopedia: “The day of atonement was thenceforth made the annual day of divine forgiveness of sin, when Satan, the accuser, failed to find blame in the people of Israel, who on that day appear pure from sin like the angels (Page 69). • When the enemies of Daniel tried to find fault with him they could not find anything and so they connived to enact a law that he would have to break to maintain his habit of worship and prayer.
