Locating translation technology within translation studies What is translation studies? It is the study

Locating translation technology within translation studies What is translation studies? It is the study of translation within the framework of an ‘academic discipline’. However, the study of translation in this manner, in the ‘western world’, began in the second half of the twentieth century. A point of its institutionalization can be traced to James S. Holmes seminal paper delivered in 1972 ‘The name and nature of translation studies’. Is translation worthy of being studied in an academic framework, if so why? 10

Class exercise Representative introductions Situating Trans-Tech in Trans-studies 1) Working in groups ask each other the following questions: • What language pairs are you translating between? • Do you have any experience of translation? • Have used any translation software? • What do you want from this course? • What do you want to do after you graduate? 2) Working in the same groups discuss where Translation Technology can be located in the Translation Studies map 3) Make a note of the answers and choose a representative to briefly convey the groups answers 13
