Personal Life According to The Official Website of the British Monarchy… • Divorced on August 28, 1996 • Began relationship with Dodi Al. Fayed in 1997 • Died in a car crash at 36 in August of 1997 • Princess Diana Memorial Fund • Raised over $125 million for 350 different charities
Land Mines According to CNN… • 1 in every 333 people lost a limb in Angola due to land mines • 100 new prosthetics were fitted every month • Began working with the Halo Trust Company
Halo Trust Co. • Visiting fields and hospitals speaking to survivors • Spent 15 hours a day for weeks listening to people’s stories • Very personal • No paparazzi • Connected with them, particularly the children
Heart of the Matter • Television special called Heart of the Matter on BBC in 1997 • Showed the war-torn countries and the victims • Goal was to bring awareness to the issue
Legacy According to Stuart Casey- Maslen… • Ottawa Mine Ban Treaty • Signed by 122 countries excluding the United States, Russia, and China • Ban the use, stockpile, production, and transfer of anti-personnel land mines • 14 million stockpiled mines were destroyed • 171, 000 land mines have been cleared from 1, 100 minefields by the Halo Trust Co.
Legacy • Without the US, Russia, and China, not enough power to enact the treaty • Countries selling mines on the black market • Russia sold mines in the Middle East which were handed off to rebel groups
